Becker all the way. So many ideas and principles you can use and adapt for later. The Becker book is in the category: Must read once a year.
The Richardson book is very good also. Love the telephone directory effect. WOW!!! But you asked me to choose. So I chose. Humbly Kuffs |

Definitely Becker. He's the man! Ted Karmilovich has a book coming out this summer that will be mind blowing. You must get it!

I'd probably get Waters' book. It's got some good advice and theories on mentalism.

All three are excellent. If you could only choose one, well, I need to know your interests. All three performers have different performing styles and thinking...but try to save up and get all three. I really liked Richardson's book the best for weird ideas that could be adapted for real world performing, but others would argue the same for M M and M. which I love as well. sigh....decisions decisions...

My vote goes to Becker. It contains almost anything you ever dreamed. Richardson is a very clever thinker so you can't lose if you buy his book. Regarding MMM, I have mixed opinions. Certainly it is a good book (especially the chapter on newspaper predictions) but I didn't like his writing style. It is not my first choice.
Anyway, this is a matter of taste and I'm sure many of you don't agree. Christos |

My vote is for Barrie Richardson's book! I now personally use 6 items from the book, "Theater Of The Mind," and my audiences love it!!

My all time favorite magic book is Al Baker's "Pet Secrets." In fact, I love all of Al Baker’s books, “Magical Ways and Means,” “Pet Secrets,” “Al Baker's Book,” “Al Baker's Second Book,” “Cardially Yours,” and “Mental Magic.” These are very rare books. However, I believe they that have been reprinted in “Secrets Ways Of Al Baker.”

Quoted from Bob Cassidy-
"Question: What book or books are essential reading for someone just starting out in mentalism? "First answer: Annemann's Practical Mental Effects and Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism are for every mentalist. "Second Answer: Annemann and Corinda are out of date. The best book is T. A. Waters' Mind, Myth and Magic. "Third answer: Waters wasn't a performer and most of his effects aren't very practical. All you need is Corinda. "Fourth answer: A great book for the beginner is Henry Hay's The Amateur Magician's Handbook. "Fifth answer: Don't forget Larry Becker's Stunners! "Sixth answer: Banachek's Psychological Subtleties and Richard Busch's Peek Performances top my list of essential reading for the modern mentalist. "While all of the respondent's mentioned valuable works, I agree with only one of the answers - the fourth. It is the only suggestion that answers THE ORIGINAL QUESTION. (caps mine) None of the other books are particularly suitable for those "just starting out in magic, particularly mentalism"... And Dr. Bob knows what he is talking about. |

1) "Self-working Mental Magic" is okay for beginners.
2) "Practical Mental Magic" is very good and more advanced. 3) "13 Steps to Mentalism" is also very good. |
