Having never been on a cruise before, I was wondering if they have Internet access? Or Cell phone service/reception? Inquiring mind wants to know.

Internet access is common and widespread among the cruise lines, and more and more have wireless connectivity too so you can connect to the Internet with your own laptop. Almost always, though, there will be some areas on the ship that are not in hot-spot areas.
Cell phone reception is varied. If you are in port, or even in sight of land, you can generally pick up the local networks. Some ships also now carry their own cell network that your phone can access while you're at sea. Neal

Most cruise ships I've worked on in the last couple of years have plenty of Internet access. This is usually provided through a computer centre that also teaches people basic computer skills. The cost, however, is fairly steep; but for email, etc., it's fine.
Some ships also now have wireless access, both in cabins and public rooms. Best bet when you are working ships is to visit Cyber/Internet Cafés on your shore days. Phones... Well, if you have a Sat Phone, they work anywhere on the globe. Otherwise, you usually need to be in sight of civilisation for reception to work for a normal cell phone. Traveling to foreign shores, you need a phone with global roaming access and appropriate accounts. Some ships also allow some sort of access to their Radio Telephone network. However, this is hugely expensive and saved for real emergencies.. Timothy [Neil and I posted at the same time. Good thing the comments matched. ] |

You should usually be able to get Internet reception from a cruise ship. As for a cell phone, I'm not sure.

Internet can be as little as 10 cents a minute (Princess) up to 50 cents a minute (Celebrity, Royal Caribbean), but in many foreign ports Internet can be as little as $1 an hour (like, in Mexico), so you just check your e-mail in port. Princess also has 10 cents a minute calling cards for calling from the ship. Other lines are up to $1 a minute! Cell phone calls with roaming in foreign ports can be $3-4 a minute!!! (I found that out the hard way...)

T-Mobile is 4.99 per minute across the board aboard ANY cruise ship, not to mention when you're on land. As far as Internet, go ashore to a cyber Café. They are everywhere.

I was on a Celebrity cruise 2 weeks ago. Cell phone price, through Verizon, is 2.45 a minute, incoming or outgoing. I did not get the price for going online, but there was a guy using his laptop right outside of the computer room door. Maybe picking up the ships Wi-Fi? I noticed cyber Cafés on St. Maarten and Aruba, but I didn't notice any on the other islands that we visited. Although, I wasn't looking for them either.
By the way, I had to be on the only ship without a magic show on it. Not even for the kids programs. Could be because it wasn't vacation time, and there were very few kids aboard. |

If you can get online, Skype has phone service which works ok.

I work ships for a living, so here's what I've seen.
There's a big difference between guests and crew. I know absolutely nothing about guest rates, so I'll let you know what's available for entertainers. The phone is satellite, and you get a little over an hour for a $10 calling card. I call only the UK & US, so I don't know what you would get for other countries. The reception is great, but there is a big delay when you're talking. Most ships have 2-4 lines available, so it's really easy to call out. Internet is mostly through Digital Seas, which was founded by a magician, Glenn Farrington. He sold it a few years back for a BUNCH of money. Anyway, you get 200 minutes for $20. That's for either Wi-Fi or at the terminals. Sometimes Wi-Fi (crew)is available throughout the ship, and even in the entertainer rooms, but often you can only get it in the crew area. There is also an option on some ships of buying 24MB cards for $10. I really can't figure them out. I get about an hour of regular surfing. |

I am doing a DVD of my "old" act, and it will hopefully include some performance tips, etc.
