What is an easy way to produce some smoke? I am making a ring / watch grinder & wondering if there is an easy & safe way to have a couple of puffs of smoke emerge from a small box (like 5" x 5"). Like maybe some type of powder that looks like smoke. Any thoughts?

Hobby shops that sell scale model trains should have smoke tablets which can probably be adapted for what you need. There is a bit of a warm-up time on them, though, so you'll likely have to experiment a bit to make it work.

I think Chance Wolf uses smoke in some of his creations. Why not check with him? He is a Café member.

A Quick & Easy Puff of "smoke" can be made from a squeeze bulb (like the kind used for squirt rings or flowers, or even just a plastic bottle like the kind used for ear drops) and some cornstarch baby powder. It can be hidden in or around the prop, or even just palmed in the hand. Give it a nice sharp squeeze and use the same hand to wave away the "smoke" as you cough or wheeze to enhance the effect. For the real thing, though, I like Jim Gerrish's Bang!Flash! gimmick described in The Wizards' Journal #14.

There is a thing called Wizard's smoke gimmick. It is an electrical device that heats up and emits smoke. It works pretty fast, unlike the smoke tablets suggested earlier.
You would have to rewire the entire thing to fit into the case. It might be easier to use a small squeese bulb with some powder in it. Richard

Great feedback guys. Thank you. I will be looking into the squeeze bulb idea, the hobby shot tablets, and the wizards smoke gimmick. I was also thinking that maybe a piece of flash paper would accomplish the goal as well. Does flash paper produce smoke as well as a brief flame? If so, this could have a double impact.
Look at what I am going to build my ring grinder out of... http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearc......ubmit=Go It is an apple peeler from Harbor Freight. It looks hilarious already. I'm going to add a couple of tubes, add a sound effect, and give it the ability to flash and smoke. I think it will be a winner. Any thoughts...? |

Flash paper with a small bit of coarse black powder in it will give a puff of smoke. But you are now dealing with fire and pyro issues.

Saw this demoed at Blackpool this weekend, great effect. Was £40 there so works out at about $80. The smoke will come from your sleeve. Hope this helps. |

I think this all started with Paul Harris. To my knowledge, he was the first to come out with Portable Smoke a few years go.
Just FYI.
