With so many countries represented at the Café I thought it would be cool to showcase national anthems from various countries. If you don't see your country's anthem here, add a reply with a link to it.

Bill,
Since you bring up Anthems I'd like to comment on my favorite. I've never been a huge fan of our Canadian one. I think its mostly performed lifelessly and rarely rallies me. The American Anthem had been criticized a lot for the confusing words and how easily people forget them but I think the people who forget the words are at fault there and not the song. When I visit the US and attend and event such as a Ball game you can feel the pride in that song and the crowd around you. My favorite melody would be the French national Anthem. Is probably because this is one of my all time favorite scenes from any film ever... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iYbEPZVVIA Take about National pride! Best, Tim Day 2 |

As for anthems, we deserve the prize for worst one. I guess that's why people keep voting to replace it with something better And to make it even worse, it has 15 parts (what do we call those again?) and the first letters of every one form the name of the guy the song was named after. Of course, nobody can remember more than the first two lines.

I LOVE my national anthem. Nothing like hearing it during a hockey playoff run. And the guy who sings it here in Ottawa does it extreme justice. As well as the American anthem. He is by far the best anthem singer ever!

Although I do like the simplicity of ours (Canada), I do like the power of the US anthem a lot more.
Yola, thanks for the info. That is an interesting thing about the letters forming the name of the guy the song is named after. Day 2 |

M. Roger Doucette taught us that one anthem can be sung in two languages. It seems obvious now, but it certainly wasn't 30 years ago.
Sadly, I don't see him on youtube. John Day 2

Nothing compares with the message of the U.S national anthem, but I also love the Russian anthem. I have a recording of the Red Army Chorus singing it that will raise chillbumps.
I understand the lyrics were changed following the fall of communism.

In South America some of the anthems, most have no lyrics, are long. I remember we put on the long version of one in error and it went on about 20 minutes, the short one runs a couple minutes.
