Every week there are posts about favorite watch effects, and I was just wondering if you guys and gals are noticing the same thing I am -- wearing watches seems to be out of fashion. I see it as a generation thing. People in their late 30's, 40's and up -- many wear a watch, but most people under 30 -- not so many watches. Cell phones seem to be the choice for finding out the time. Sure, some still wear watches for fashion, but my observation is that fewer and fewer are. Which got me thinking -- one day (in the not so distant future) will performing a watch effect be like performing a prediction effect using an 8-track tape?

Yes.
And I think you can safely update the reference to, "like performing a prediction effect using a cassette."
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I have never worn a watch, or any jewelry, for that matter.
But it depends on your audience. I have worked many venues where the gentlemen are all over 50 and no matter how well they are connected technologically speaking, they all wear wristpieces. I have also worked many venues of youngsters, and even though they may have iPods in the inner top pockets of their DKNY suits, they still wear a fashionable timepiece for the sake of status. Allow me to be snooty: if there is not a gentleman (or well bespoke woman) with a somewhat dashing timepiece adorning the wrist then I am probably not working that venue. Seems aloof, but fortunately for us watchworkers, the ladies who lunch and the gentlemen who gather for after dinner cordials and tobaccos all still seem to use their wrists as a canvas for their social standing. Super Tuesday 2! D I am Don Theo III, and I approve this message. |

You are right DT3 -- venues are key. Guess I should stop using my MOABT's for just trying to pick up hot sorority chicks at the local Swig & Suds and start looking for some people with "culta"

Even if young people do not wear a watch now, it is a very common item. Everyone knows what it is, and knows what it does. Therefore makes it still strong for impromptu effects. I am 40 and I can say you are correct, when I was in my 20s or early teens I did not wear a watch. Now I am older I wear one every day. I do feel a watch is still a very strong item to work with, it is well known and everyone understands its mechanics.
I am sure there are effects out there that do the same type of effect on a cell phone time as there is with a wrist watch. If not I am sure they are to come sooner or later.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

I still use slates - got a 6" by 3.7" set...but all framed as a demo of what psuedo-psychics would do...
but then again, if you know the Carlyle Card move, you can perform many slate type effects with blank business card stock... anyway - watches - I'm 35,i wear one, it looks like a victorian stopwatch! but I know what you mean - you don't see them as much, shame...they add class to an already classy shirt... I think its just when you're young, time isn't important...whereas as you get older, you like to keep an eye on it...

I usually keep a watch on me and I'm 17.
But it's true that many young persons do not wear a watch. Every now and then when I don't have any watch and I ask someone for the time they just pop off their Cell phones. I bet that in the near future there will be much more cell phone tricks. Anyway, if they don't have a watch you can use yours. However it's not like you would borrow someone watch to do the effect. I really got interested in the link that people have with their objects, and I create effects around this. This is why I got really interested into watch works. Though there was some good points here.

I carry a pocket watch...
I agree with DT3... Watches are still a social status symbol, this will be around for a long time.

I think Book tests are safe for a while yet.. Someone recently showed me their new Amazon 'Kindle'- the electronic reading device that is meant to make books obsolete...
An awful thing- I still think most people like a book they can handle, share and keep on a well stocked shelf... That said I do remember someone years ago confidently telling me "this email business will never catch on..." So perhaps I am just becoming old and stuck in my ways and should go off and work on my MOTHER OF ALL KINDLE TESTS... This was all fields when I were a lad.. and look it now.. all shops and parking lots...

Annemann's Krazy Kode can be adapted to a spam-email...
if you're doing a gig, and have a contact email address, tell them you can often pick up on the types of email people get, and often able to (remote view/whatever suits you) with certain electronic information..just ask them to keep a weeks worth of spam email from such and such a date.. then just set up a dummy email account and send it onto them within the dates specified...ask for the batch of spam email, force your one onto the participant and away you go...

Interesting adaptation, Abraxus.
I have a tough time finding those "special watches" that can fit my wrist and looks feminine. This is probably something to bring up in the mystique, but if anyone knows of a model that looks feminine, let me know. |

If I ever wear a watch I wear a pocket watch, I find having a watch on my wrist annoying, not sure why - I wear other stuff on my wrist......

Abraxus; that is an awesome spin! My only concern would be adding to the annoyance which we call spam (sic).
You could also use an acrostic poem (where it spells a word using the first letter of each line) to id a card or.... With regards to the watch, my wife bought me one and I only wear it for sentimental value. I believe this will keep them relevant, although not with the younger crowd. |

Yes, Abraxus, very nice. And I love the MOAK(indke)Ts! I do think watches will be relevant for some time, but I also think that your basic stem watch might be in short supply, making various impromptu, borrowed watch effects difficult. But watches and clocks have to stay around, right, otherwise what will happen to the phrases "clockwise" and "counter clockwise"!?
