My first exposure to Syd Segal came in the form of Gaft Card Magic, a dvd/booklet of 5 tricks that can be done with gaffed cards. I actually wore my cards out because I used them so much during walk around.
A year or two passes and Syd floats back into the scene with a book release with JC Wagner. Yes, THE JC Wagner. The Commercial Magic of JC Wagner is my all time favorite book. Period. I had the binding cut off and spiral bound so I could study it more thoroughly. So Syd and JC release their book, Full Metal Jacket and it is a big hit. Strong, commercial magic. It is a limited print and sold out quickly. Enter Simply Sydney, Syd's newest release to the magic community. I am a fan of the Syd Segal style of magic. Casual enough that you feel like you are hanging out with a friend, but powerful enough so that you can fry your spectators. Let's take a look at the effects: A Logical Lesson: This effects was originally in Full Metal Jacket and was one of my favorites then. Basically you start with 2 4 of a kind and end with a 10 card run of one suit. The handling is super clean and is as the title implies, very logical. Collector's Edition: This one can be seen on a demo at http://www.dananddave.com. It is a collector's effect with a transpo ending. Syd actually goes over 3 or 4 different ways to end the effect. I am a fairly skilled card handler and this one fooled me. No Lap Reynolds: This is Syd's take on the classic Ace assembly plot. It starts with 4 kings and each king joins the leader. Syd mentions that it is a classic Ace effect, and the kings instantly change to aces. The handling here is very streamlined. Double D's and Aces: I'm a big fan of practicing an effect for a few weeks before letting an audience see it, however, this one is so easy to do that I was using it within a few days. There are 2 different handlings, one from Syd and one from JC. It is basically an ace spelling trick but with a SPECTATOR shuffled deck. GAFT: This effect is the only gaffed card effect on the dvd. I'm pretty sure that you will already have the gaffs necessary for this. If not, they are standard gaffs that are easy to obtain. There is a ton of magic packed into this visual effect Triumphant Turn Down: This is Syd's take on the classic Triumph effect. This has a convincer that can be applied to any Triumph. You will be amazed at how one move makes all the difference. Indications: This is my favorite effect on the dvd. It uses one stranger card to the deck and involves 2 selected cards. Very commercial. I think that anyone interested in strong magic that will not only fool your magic buddies, but also entertain an audience, should pick this up. Syd's effects are structured so that the magic happens when the spectator least expects it. This and a pdf version of Full Metal Jacket can be picked up at http://www.dananddave.com. If you order through the Buck's website, you get a bonus effect not included on the dvd. Donny |
