Some nonperformance magic and witchcraft books that I have found useful (in no particular order):
"Compendium Malificarum", Guazzo "Malleus Malificarum", Sprenger and Kramer "Magick for Beginners: The Power to Change Your World", J.H. Brennan "Nocturnal Witchcraft", Konstantinos "The Power of the Witch", Laurie Cabot "The Magician's Workbook", Donald Tyson "Book of Shadows", Gerald Gardner "The History of Witchcraft and Demonology", Montague Summers "Witchcraft and Black Magic", Montague Summers "Hereditary Witchcraft", Raven Grimassi "Italian Witchcraft", Raven Grimassi "Necronomicon" and "Necronomicon Spellbook", Simon "Witchcraft and Magic in Europe" (Vol. I-VI), Bengt Ankarloo "The Golden Dawn: A Complete Course in Practical Ceremonial Magic", Israel Regardie "Modern Magick: Eleven Lessons in the High Magickal Arts", Donald Michael Kraig "Forbidden Rites: A Necromancer's Manual of the Fifteenth Century", Richard Kieckhefer Books on bizarre magick are no substitute for the real thing when it comes to learning the history and background.

And of course, "Witchcraft for Dummies" found at the local Barnes and Noble. By the way, Allen, how about those comments about Marc Salem's show from your lay friend?
