There was also a follow up on Talk of the Nation (NPR talk show) with the author of the article and Jamy Ian Swiss. If you poke around the NPR website, it's archived somewhere I'm sure.

Yes, it is a wonderful piece. In it Adam Gopnik discusses the intellectual side of magic and favorably compares magic to other arts - also found in the download (discussion with the author of the piece) at the web site in Princehal's post above.
