A lot of people gave their opinion about what they believe is the best label or the worst lately.
Since I'm working to define correctly my style, so I can head in the right position I found those discussion useful. Somehow, the ideal label for me would be one that allows a lot of freedom in my effects as well as not claiming to be psychic. So I came to the '' Psychological Illusionist ''. But then what you show is an illusion and some thinks it takes away the wonder. However, what about presenting your effects, with any delightful presentation. And if someone asks how you do, then you give them the facts, without giving any trace of trickery involved. Like a very great painter, which has to be at the sum of his talents to make someone stand in awe in front of a canvas, you would the the mentalists that is at the sum of the psychology and suggestion to achieve his effect. So people stand in awe for your skill an showmanship. While keeping the sense of wonder. What do you think?

Athos - I'd say steer clear of everyone's definitions! find your own..it takes longer, but its more enjoyable...
look over both sides of the fence, then find out what suits you personally... who do you admire as a mentalist? what could you take on board and alter to suit you as a person?

Abraxus:
What suits me personally: - Everything that don't fall in the psychic field. I like methods that are bold or use suggestion and hypnotism. I like humor and art. I like to give a moral to my effects something that will make people say ''ahhh'' at the end of a trick. I like kind of persuasion, mind control effects. To influence people to make certain decisions under your control, etc. - Who do you admire as a mentalist?: Derren Brown for his sense of the art, he creates compelling demonstrations and give them a meaning, and doesn't stand cold with his presentation, he invest a lot of himself in his effects. He doesn't use any clipboards or props to achieve his effects, he deliver straight. I also like his tendency to go on traditionalism, taking old feats and making them new again Paul Brook because he is such a clever person, I really like his contributions. Max Maven for his sense of humor and his character, also for his creative mind. I like to gain rapport with my audiences, not appear like a creepy acted stage person. I like to present something that people can't explain while keeping it believable. I like humor and showmanship. I also like casual performances, I create a lot of impromptu effect, making mentalism from nothing is something that I enjoy very much. The ability to perform something anywhere anytime. If you would really be a Psychological Illusionist, then you wouldn't need any preparation as far as I see it. I like things that seems totally impromptu, that use no pre-show or stooges. ~Max

To Athos:
First step is to put it all on paper, as I am sure you do and are doing.... But it is only after doing many, many shows that you will find what is comfortable for you and what works for you with audiences. People have become successful that make claims from all over the spectrum and no claims at all. Success is not everything. Art and financial success do not always go hand in hand. You can be very artistic and have little success and by the same token not at all artistic and a hack and do well also. The reverse is true also. You can be artistic and have great success or a hack and have no success at all. It also depends a lot on what you personally define as success. However it is hard to have longevity without some amount of success, somehow. Many drop out or give up as well, especially after trying mentalism for a while.

Paul Brook is a great fella, proud to call him a friend...pick up his new book athos - it sounds just up your mental-alley....
As for character, well, may I ask how old you are? you seem a young lad from your photo - I'd say try a few things out, see how you feel using them...John Cesta has summed it up perfectly as far as I'm concerned, in quite a zen way too may I add.... Good luck, try not to get too frustrated though....

Has anyone used the title:
"Peculiarist" ?? Offers a broad range of investigating things not quite "normal." As we pass through different phases of life and performance -- defining who we are on stage too closely might not allow for a "smooth" transition. Andruzzi might be a good example of that problemmoving from comedy to bizarre.

I've been an experimentalist before...
there's lots of -ists around, even "p*ss art" ones! it's very hard to help with this kinda thing from my point of view, as its such an individual thing...how about that? the individualist...which, ironically, is what everyone should be...

I'm 17 abraxus.
Yes, an opinion is like the flu, it's not because you have one that you have to give it to us I was just worried. I ordered Alchemist tools, but I think it will be out of stock for a while, I'm also trying to find Wonder Words cd's, and my shelf would be pretty complete

Its going to be extremely difficult for any 17 year old to successfully come across as a mentalist who approaches their performance under the "Psychological" guise. No-one will buy into someone who is so young and inexperienced in "Life" to have such an overwhelming knowledge and expertise in the subtleties of Human psychology, suggestion and hypnosis.
The psychic angle would however be easier and more believable regardless of your ethical stance on it. It will be difficult, I wholeheartedly recommend you get a copy of "Making money from Magic" by Drew Mcadam. It gives you the absolute best advice regarding choosing your character. First class stuff!

That's the same age that luke jermay first released his work with Kenton I think...
I would say to you sir, have a good long read of Paul's book when its back in print, ive just started to read it again, I've only been into this mentalism stuff for a decade (i think?) and I still go and revisit and rethink lots of things...we've all been there, just stick to what feels natural and positive to you and I don't think you'll go far wrong... generally though,im very keen to avoid all labels, apart from ones marked "Poison"...what you define, you create after all as the wonder-wizard himself would say...

Thanks abraxus,
I have some performing experiences, I wont lie and say that I performed mentalism for 40 years. I used to perform magic at a young age, but at 14-15 years old-ish I moved to mentalism because it felt right with me. My oldest performance would be when I was 11 for a event for kids, I was horrible, but hey, I learned from my errors! I have created some material too, I handed a few manuscript to a couple of freinds and knowledgable persons, I got good reviews. I really like to create, ever since I readed Absolute Magic and Pure effect I try to follow the guideline. ~Max

Derren brown has made magic actually worth watching for the layman. with this in mind, drop everything from your act that is not interesting to you, and then you will find that you too can be like Derren Brown!!
