Hi,
Thinking of getting one of the following: Seance Hauntiques The Shiels Effect Any advice as to which is best for smaller intimate gatherings... thanks, |

I reckon if you want general usable routines, then Shiels (although be warned some of the 'chemical effects' are hard to come by in this day and age of terrorism and the nanny-state). If you want to concentrate on Seance type effects, then obviously Seance. However, if you want some inspiration as to just how artful and exqusisite a so-called bizarre effect can be, then Hauntiques. If you're just starting out, why not look at the book of Baba, Bill Ligon and Mark Raven? They're all 'here' and only too willing to help.

If I could go back, I would have liked to have started with ' The Practitioner: Journeys into Grey ' Eugene Poinc. This book taught me alot.

For intimate gatherings I would choose "The Dark Waltz" by Michael Fraughton (fraughton on the Café):

But it has two strengths that are more or less unique: * It is a good book period. It can be read just for the enjoyment of the style and narration. * The routines offered are probably the most inspiring scripts for routines I have ever read. Poinc seems to have been a master of minimalist verbiage, something that cannot be praised enough. Read his routines to learn how to tell stories with gesture and the odd well-placed word. It is a remarkably engaging and inspiring read. If I can ever perform to the level I imagine Eugene must have maintained when he presented this work, I will be very surprised and happy. |

Sorry, Soulstar, you are quite correct (and BTW J, "Shiel's Effect" is available free from Quentin Reynold's site).
I was thinking of 13 & Cantrip. Apologies for any confusion. S

I'd get Hauntiques.
Christian comes closer than anyone I know of to performing what I would like to perform if I could be a real performing magician. (Yeah, that was a pretty bad sentence.) So in my very humble opinion, it's not about effects: it's about what kind of performer you want to be. |

I got Hauntiques yesterday and haven't been able to put it down (much to the annoyance of the missus).
A great book - lots of stories accompanying the effects make it highly readable, if just to get an idea of the things possible with storytelling and illusions. There is everything in there from one off effects to whole routines of effects. Trouble is now - I spent the afternoon perusing the local antique market trying to get a few items (am I hooked on the whole concept of Hauntiques? Yes). It's also made me realise how much I need to get to know coin magic, if only for how to conceal / reveal items. Cheers, Matt |

You can start with any of those mentioned above, because if this is your thing, and you like this field of presentation, then you will get them all eventually no doubt about it.

Back to the original question, I would get Capricornian Tales before Hauntiques, but I have a personal affection for CT.
By all means get Vo Du Ma Gick, too, as well as Raven's Tales and...um..er...The Holy Art. Bill

Thanks for all the suggestions - got a copy of Hauntiques to tide me over. All the rest are on my list.
As an aside, Hauntiques is staggering. Really was impressed. Ordered it on Friday, had it on Saturday (thank you Magicbox!) and it's not left my mind since. J? |
