I can't help but agree- do not smoke your scorpions.
They're hard to light. And it makes them testy.

Shane of PEntology fame, knows a lot about scorpions. Like the notion of fighting fire with fire; the sting of one scorpion can actually counteract the sting of another. Rubber covering tips are available at pet shops for the stinger of a scorpion. I wonder if superglue might not seal the stinger? Any one feeling adventerous??

WHAT?
Sorry Kotah, that is straight up BS. The sting of another scorpion does not counteract the sting of the first. It just gets you two stings and hurts more. I have never seen a stinger cover in my life. Besides, if you can hold the stinger to get it on (Which is not all that hard to do...), you don't need it. Superglue- Again, just cruel and unnecessary. If it is an emperor (Which is the only scorpion I would ever recommend anyone ever get if they intend to handle it in any way) it is the claws that you need to watch out for. The stingers are last ditch "Oh my gosh, I am being eaten by a mongoose" defense. If you are making it that mad, you deserve the sting. Even with superglue sealing its stinger closed, it can still poke you with the sharp and pointy part. That actually hurts just as much as the poison itself. Kind of like a bite from a Mexican Red Knee Tarantula. The poison isn't that bad, but you just got stabbed in the back of the hand with a couple of toothpicks (And no...a tarantula cannot be defanged and survive either. Their poison sacks cannot be removed and you cannot cap the fangs. Any of those would be fatal to the spider.) Here is the skinny on scorpions. The bigger the claws, the smaller the stinger is by comparison. Big clawed scorpions use their claws more than their stinger, and their poison is less toxic. Teenie tiny claws and a big muscular stinger, they sting and do it well. Get an Emperor, the biggest, most threatining and yet the safest of the scorpions, learn how to handle it properly and you will be fine. If you can't be bothered to do that, get something else. Sorry for being a purveyor of BS; it was presented to me as fact. I am always open to admitting a mistake; and to learn from those who know.

This is a very interesting thread. I have learnt alot. There is however one question still nagging away at me. Could a very poisonous scorpion kill an elephant? Is this possible?

I doubt it, but I do know an elephant can kill a scorpion.

None that I know of. There are very few scorpions with strong enough venom to kill a human, although there are a lot of them that will definately make you very very sick. Most of the people that die from scorpion stings are either old and unhealthy or very young and small. Of course, there is that small percentage of the population that is allergic to scorpion venom in the same way that some people are allergic to bee toxin...That can cause a bigger problem then the effects from the venom itself.
I know of one fellow who was stung by a bark scorpion (Usually from 3 to 5 centimeters, tiny little bloke. They live out in Arizona mainly. They are the most poisonous in the united states- Tiny claws and a relatively large stinger). He said that it hurt like heck, his entire arm eventually went numb, and that there was a lot of swelling in the glands in his armpits. It all went away without antivenom withing two days. So I would have to guess that there are no scorpions that could kill an elephant. I'd be amazed if they could get far enough into the skin for the poison to spread. It would take an animal with much longer fangs and active poison to affect a pachyderm. A black mamba, gabboon viper or a cobra maybe, but even then I would have doubts. Gwyd |

Thanks gsidhe. Scorpions, spiders, aligators and land snakes don't really worry me. What gives me the creeps are giant squid, conger eels, piranha and jelly fish. I guess I am gonna keep my feet firmly on land.

I have heard of a species of frog that can take down an elephant and some rare snake breeds like GWYD mentioned. I think this frog is called a thin arrow shooting frog or something akin to that. He has his back filled with venomous hair like arrows and can actually shoot them out in self defense. Its said to be a deadly poison. Is that the one which they show you in Mel Gibsons Apocalypto, in the final scenes when the hero is he pursued by the villains he catches a frog by its feet and rubs some wood arrows onto its back and then blows them at his enemies. Did you guys watch that movie ? Scintillating film.

Poison Dart Frog- They don't actually shoot anything, but the glands on their back exude a wonderfully deadly poison. All it takes is a lick, ingestion or introduction of the toxin through a wound and you are done for. Perfect for poisoning blowgun darts.
An elephant would have to be shot with a poison dart or eat one as a snack, but it would definately do the trick. Gwyd |
