Here are my magic youtube videos. Please look through them when you have the chance, and tell me which ones your favorite. I'll then try and practice that one more. http://www.youtube.com/fishsticks911
Lately my interest in magic has been dwindling. I've been more interested in the area of numismatics (the study of money) and I haven't practiced magic in quite some time. Since then, I can still perform my sponge ball rountine fine but I'm not as good as I used to be. I want to get into coin magic but I guess I'm simply lazy and I do not want to practice 5 hours a day . Practice is essenial in magic though, and I feel like I'm losing my love for magic. This scares me alot. I have Bobo's modern coin magic book and I want to learn some cool slights like the backpalm and the four coin roll down. I guess one reason why I haven't been interested in magic lately was from my last thread. I posted about doing the four coin roll down, I have my verison of doing it but also there is a better , harder verson, and I'm having trouble understand how to do it. I simply can't do it. About a month ago I practiced it for 6 hours a day straight. I couldn't do it! It was so frusterating. Frusterated, I kind of quit magic. I used to have my own magic business and I still have tons and tons of surplus magic supplies. I feel like I'm just losing interest in it. Any advice? |

The practice is a major part of it. If you don't love the practice magic might not be for you.....however, it is also good to take a break from time to time...How long you are able to stay away from it will tell you alot.

I really enjoy practice. I'm a card guy, and I am very interested in gambling sleights.
Although, I don't say to myself, "I'm going to practice six hours a day." I just find myself always with a deck of cards in my hand or in my pocket, wherever I am. Practice shouldn't be a painful thing. If it is, you probably should find something else to do that you enjoy. |

Why not try more self working magic? my friend bill pryor has been a professional magician for most of his life. guess how many "moves" he knows? 2. one is a dye tube steal and the other is ascanio spread, and if you talk to him he don't even consider them slights!
this doesn't mean you don;t have to practice because you do but the methods are much easier to acuire and you can spend more time on presentation and entertaining the people. magic is a form of entertainment not moves. if you like coin magic you could find more self working coin tricks ten you will ever have time to perform. again practice is still nessecrry but the learning curve is significatly reduced |

Often a mentor is very helpful if you can find one. Especially if can have a jamming session.

It took me more than 6,500 hours of practice before I was able to produce 8 silver dollars from my DP. All that practice for a three minute routine.
It took me more than 10 YEARS before I ever did card productions and split-fans in front of anybody. All that practice for a three minute routine. Those are just two examples of what I've been through. I'm not able to tell you what to do, I'm just telling you what it took me. I didn't do it for any one other than myself. Good luck. |

I'm sure glad you put in all those hours Justin because it sure provided me with a few mins of awesome entertainment! I just love the clip of your card work that I've seen around!

Advice: If you don't want to practice...become a mentalist.

Hey Fishsticks!
This isn't a race, learn at your own pace, Justin's post is really interesting, 10 years for his card productions. (that really puts practise into perspective) Magic is it seems to me is something we "mature" at, like a wine. As Joshua suggests: Learn a self worker as well. While practising a knuckle-buster: continue working on a sponge ball routine, card routine, propped gimmick.... which isn't as hard: but get feedback from friends etc...it'll improve you and give you motivation to continue.

But it does take considerable work, experience and insight to have your audience not merely patronise you that your clever little tricks and stunts are in any way close to being magical, yet alone have an educated audience believe they were part of something real that night. |

Probably you may ask yourself again why you do magic. To entertain people? To see what you can achieve (self enjoyment)? To go for competition? With different aims you may consider doing different types of magic.
The bottom line is, you should enjoy doing magic.
A novice't reflection: I like watching my audience's jaws drop, but sadly in reality I'm just too busy to enjoy it.
