Black Tiger Rising Deck
I try to not submit reviews for things unless I have had them for 6 months. Well, I got my Black Tiger Rising Deck last October, so it is now time for my review: following the description of my favorite use yet. I was performing for a Halloween party that ended up having a large number of professional theatre people in attendance. This was slightly intimidating for me because I didn’t know before hand just who all was going to be in attendance. Now, I did NOT bring my rising deck with me. Instead, I had video of my rising deck in action burned onto a DVD… For my performance that night I used my Tigers with the Red pips and they (as always) got wonderful reactions. It can be easy to forget just how hard these affect lay people. For my finale however, I didn’t use any deck of cards. Instead, I had one of the people attending the party take one of the host’s decks of cards and use them (this was a house party). The volunteer took the deck and dealt cards until they wanted to stop, then took their selected card. The host then opened the sealed DVD that they had received from me beforehand and the entire party witnessed a card rise up from a deck that was placed into a wine glass, the volunteer’s selected card. Now for the good, the bad, and the ugly… The good: The deck looks wonderful. It is a black backed Bicycle deck. I had been searching for black bikes for years, and after I found out that Ellusionist carries them regularly, I now use them for most of my deck purchases. Whether you are a fan of E or not, you have to admit that the Black Tigers are very nice decks. The gimmick for the deck is fairly self working and a decent method for achieving the desired effect. The bad: It can be a bit difficult to control the rise of the selected card. I realize that this can be an issue with any type of deck like this, but it has been a bit of a disappointment for me with this particular deck. Also, while trying to not give too much away, I feel that my gimmick must have been the one that slipped through quality control. I feel that I can’t use this deck up close because to me, the gimmick is very easily seen. Without giving too much away, there is a certain section that doesn’t look right at all… The ugly: Mine has essentially become unreliable. I mentioned above how it is difficult to control the speed of the rise, well now I will explain how bad that can be. I performed this deck recently for a couple of different people. In the first performance, I left the deck in the box and just opened the lid. It took about 2 seconds for the card to reach maximum height. Not spooky or really all that interesting. If I wanted that, I would buy “Toaster”. Then, the next day, same deck, same setup, I put the deck in the box and opened the lid. The spectator and I then couldn’t believe our eyes. It actually made us laugh. We started a timer… it took 5, again, in letters this time, five, minutes for the card to get 2/3 of the way up. In summary: It is a good looking deck with a nice looking effect. I just wish it were a bit more reliable for me. It could just be my deck; I’ve thought about getting it as a Ghost deck and seeing if it works any better. The gimmick seems like it should last up to regular use for a while. If the effect looks interesting to you, then by all means get it, just be prepared to potentially deal with the effect not always looking the same each time. JLJ

Those who want a rising card effect - GET 'BOX MONSTER'
Go onto E's site and watch Nathan Perform this. This is easy to do, and gets very strong reactions esp at the end when the card slides out of the spread on it own! You end up clean - can use any deck Let me know what you think |
