OR
Do really want the pencil or pen answer?

Yes?

Americans - Spend God knows what on developing a pen you can use to write with in space.

Russians - Use a pencil.

Wonderful urban legend, but a myth.

I've taken to writing magic instructions on the left side of a piece of paper in ink, then using a pencil to jot down patter and presentation ideas down the right side aligned with the part of the routine I'm trying to present.

Pilot G-2 pens in multiple colors.

And a #2 pencil. Hey, I DO work at ACT, after all! Smile

Whicever is at hand. I always use a pen when doing crossword puzzles, as a pencil suggests a lack of confidence.

Pen, ballpoint, Bic is my favorite.
Any color except black. Black is boring.
Green is not boring.
Double spaced, to allow for editing.
A single line to delete, arrows, carats, more arrows.
I do a lot of editing.

And I carry one with me 89% of the time.
Clipped to my shirt, but not in the pocket.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

General weapon of choice- .5 mm mechanical pencil or a .8 mm balck felt tip (Pencil is preferred). I use the extra fine point sharpies for some of my artwork and for making glass stencils. I love calligraphy pens and good fountain pens but their use is limited.
My handwriting is smaller than the type on my screen, I need to use fine points.

I use whatever's lying around, but usually:

Bic pen for puzzles
Fine Sharpie for addressing large envelopes
Crayola colored pencils for drawing
#2 wooden pencil for marking cuts on wood
Spray paint for graffiti
Brush for painting walls
Keyboard for composing e-mails
Chainsaw, axe and splitting maul for cutting firewood
Coarse-thread drywall screws for furniture assembly
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

100% of the time I use a Dixon Ticonderoga 1388-2/HB soft, sharpened with an authentic class-room style, wall-mounted, hand-cranked, double-cylindered rotary sharpener.

Sharpies, baby! It's all about the Sharpies...

I often use "golf pencils" for unimportant scribbles as I have boxes of them for tricks using Billets.

Oh, also I often use Mirado Black Warriors for drawing and sketching.
