This may have been asked before, but I can't find it...
Is there anywhere on the net that sells telescopic reaching rods or anyone have any good tips for making one? I've been using a butchered set of 'rabbit ear' tv antennae. The rod's a great size, but it's shiny and you have to be really careful not to hit the metal on any hard surfaces. |

Something small (hopefully fits in a pocket) that converts into a longer pole Would be great if it had a small hook on the end.
They're mentioned a lot in books, but I'm unsure if they're commercially available or if anyone else has made one and can give me any clues. |

A flimsy telescopic rod might not be what you want. are you going to be in a fixed location? if so a wooden rod behind a table leg would serve you better.
a little goes a long way "on the table". A rod the size of your thigh will give you a seemingly supernatural amount of reach in the dark, and you can hide that in a pant-leg! You might try looking at small cheap camera tripods to tear apart. I've seen similar tele-legged things on them at your local TESCO type store... I'm giving you other options here, because I don't know where to get exactly what you are looking for. But it's always nice to know one's options...

There is a type of telescoping pointer, used for pointing at the screen during presentations--folds up to the size of a pocket pen, when clipped to your pocket looks just like a pen. The one I had was surprisingly sturdy when extended. Hide in plain sight, yes?

Another idea is a telescoping tool sold with a magnet on the end. These are available in hardware stores (or whatever they might be called in NZ) and other stores that sell tools. They are fairly substantial and can take a bit of weight on the business end. The magnet might be useful in some circumstances, and would also serve as a hook. There is also a flexible (not telescoping) tool with a wire claw at the end that you can operate with a syringe-type plunger.

One solution is to look for telescoping pointers. They are about the size of a pen and they extend up to about two feet. There are very much like your rabbit ears. Some have a strong magnet on the end and others have a alligator clip.
For longer reaches try a crappie fishing pole. I am not being profane. The crappie is a kind of fish. Those poles are lightweight, usually fiberglass, often black and can be as long as 20 feet! I have used a bunch of them for my seance theater show. I will sometime use only a few sections of the pole is I need a shorter length. Ebay is a great source for them and they are pretty cheap. |

You can try looking for car antennae. There are eloctronically operated and can give you a range of 150 cms and are almost 20 cms when compact.
As I have not seen it at close range...cannot comment on any sound made. Hope this helps. |

I had this idea to use a reaching rod, and have a tea filter of the following design at the end .. http://www.absolutvision.com/gallery/gal.......100.jpg
then, in the cover of darkness, have a *small* piece of dry ice inside the tea filter... and let the rod be high up above the seance table ... and maybe for a second right above a participants head .... to create instant cold spots... any thoughts on this ?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll check some of these out.
I hadn't considered the option of a magnet on the end. That may work well, unless it clicks loudly once it engages with any item I want to move - which is nothing too heavy, only a tambourine and a ball. I will be seated at a small table, and would prefer being able to conceal the rod on my body so the area can be clean. I'm after a similar effect to this (but without the assistant): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7s6yklp80Q And yes, Bill, they are also called 'hardware stores' in NZ.. Thanks again!! |

To avoid 'talking',glue a small piece of fabric to the end of the magnet.

I had a tough time locally -- but finally found (got several sets) of fiberglass tent poles. One of my philosophies on "reaching" is that the effect must occur in places well awat from the me,dium.
I love the idea of tea bagged dry ice. A good cold spot is hard to find. One of the best reach-rod ideas -- a single thread passing through the hair......
