One of the first books I ever picked up was Henry Hay's "Amateur Magician's Handbook", to read the chapter on mentalism.
Then someone recommended Karl Fulves "Self Working Mental Magic". From there, "Annemann's Practical Mental Effects" (published as "Practical Mental Magic" by Dover), and Corinda's "13 Steps to Mentalism". Yes, it's "old school" mentalism in some cases, but look at the underlying ideas and methods and you'll get a lot out of it. A lot of later, newer material draws on Annemann and Corinda. You can move on from there. Have fun! Rory

Jay Are was posting while I was writing.
I'd stay away from Waters until you've digested Annemann and Corinda. Rory

Thanks for all of your recommendations.
I am 26, have been doing some magic (well a few tricks) for about 6 months but I am really interested in mentalism rather than card magic as mentalism just seems so much more impossible to me. |

Corinda especially is a complete sourcebook of techniques, but take a look at Fulves first to get used to the gap between cause and effect because it's a lot wider than in card magic. |

Very true Nate, his Number Magic book is also greatly overlooked and contains the cornerstones of some great mentalism ideas...
