Can anyone offer a review or other commentary about John Luka's "Uncovered" DVD? It is listed by Murphy's and will probably be carried by many dealers. It seems very interesting!
Thank you for your help! Tom |

There's a trailer here on Kozmo Magic:
http://kozmomagic.com John was also on Reel Magic Quarterly #3 and performed and taught his wonderful “The Invisible Palm” routine.

I have John Luka UNCOVERED. Not that this matters, but I like the cover and the DVD case is like the ones that Reel Magic Quarterly come in. I like them because they are very thin and easily stored ( I carry new DVD in my lap top case so I appreciate it being compact ).
And I loved the opening music. Music on DVD's is usually horrible, but this had some beautiful guitar work. That's where I first saw John Luka, on Reel Magic #3. On UNCOVERED there are 8 routines performed and explained. John performs in a studio, but I like the audience he has. They are children, adults and teens and above. Just like you would encounter at a restaurant if a family was dining out. That's what I thought anyway. John is one polished performer. He reminds me of the actor James Mason ( warm and charismatic ). The routines are professional pieces ( 8 of them ). Of course I went right to card to wallet as I love those routines. It's John's version of John Mendoza's brilliant routine. Mendoza used a Bendix Bombshell, Luka uses a z-fold. As soon as he pulled it out I got mine because it looked identical. I got mine from Bob King and it's called the new solution wallet: http://members.aol.com/bkingmagic/index.htm?f=fs It's a beautiful routine and any card to wallet fan would be interested in it ( if you don't know the Mendoza routine, it will fool you ). I just started watching the DVD and think it's wonderful. I'll post more as I go through it.

I've been enjoying this DVD so much. It's areal winner. These are powerful magic routines that will entertain an audience. PERFECT material for restaurants. There are some excellent DVD's coming out in 2008. I would make John Luka's DVD one of your purchases. You will do the routines on this DVD.
John has a webiste and sells some things needed ( wallet, jumbo cards, etc. ). http://www.johnlukamagic.com/ I'll touch on ones that really hit home with me: 1) Licked At Last: an “In The Hands" Triumph routine that is perfect when you don't have a table. I thought I knew what, but the second part fooled me. Very nice! 2) Wow Revisited: Excellent version of “The Biddle Trick”. I really like the way this is routine. 3 )The Airplane Card: The “Card To Pocket”. I got caught up in the entertainment value and missed the move ( just like when I got to see Mac King-I always miss the sleights ). Excellent version! 4)Michigan Monte: A no gaff version of “Sidewalk Shuffle.” John uses Jumbo cards and brings the audience on a great ride. FLIPPER COIN ROUTINE - production and vanish of three coins. The ttile tipped it off to me and still I was fooled. Excellent coin routine! 5) BACK TO THE 19th CENTURY - An assembly using no gaffs or extra cards. KILLER. It's John's version of DARYL'S JOlly Jumping Jokers. Worth the price of the DVD. Daryl is very picky about what he endorses. Here's what he says: "Uncovered is great! I particularly enjoyed Licked at Last, Michigan Monte, and, of course, Back to the 19th Century. Your magic is very well thought out and your attention to detail is inspiring. Dai Vernon would be proud! Thank you for sharing." - Daryl

Christopher,
Thank you again for your very informative comments! I ordered a copy and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. At first I was torn between purchasing the DVD or the book; Luka's performance style is clearly worth studying! Tom |

First of all, I want you to know that I consider John Luka a friend. Second, I want you to know that I am connected with Kozmo Magic in the sense that I have products that are on the market produced by the company. All that being said, most of you know that I am a truthful person--I only speak when I feel there is something to be shared to benefit the community.
I received John Luka's new DVD, Uncovered. It is full of some very good Magic. The routines are the kind of stuff one could add to one's repertoire and go out and perform for the public and make some money. The routines I liked best are "Licked At Last" which is a great take on a "Triumph"; "Wow Revisited" is John's handling of the classic "Biddle" trick; and "Back To the 19th Century" which is a real fooler handling for a four aces (Jokers in this case) routine. While the routines are good, the most important aspect of the DVD is seeing John Luka in performance. On the DVD, they are done in the studio--yet there is a "real world" feel to them. John is a smooth performer--his confidence assures his audience that they are seeing something of value. He interacts directly on a human-to-human level that is compelling and comfortable. This is a golden example of what a magic performance needs to be. I highly reccommend this DVD. I also reccommend Luka's book of the same name. Together, they provide some great material worthy of your consideration. Enjoy the search. Respectfully, Paul Green |
