Hi,
I've been playing with Chris Kenner's Missing link rubber band linking routine. Does anyone have any tips on the get ready? In my hands it takes alot longer than the 1.5 seconds Kenner suggests and looks just like what it is: a topological nightmare of a starting position which thus gives away the method to some extent. Any hints on either doing it quickly, smoothly or with some cover? Thanks. Loz |

I've found the more you do this effect the easier it becomes and the quicker it is to get into the correct position.
The impact of the effect over shadows every thing else in my opinion. if you go to magicvideodepot.com I have a deomo of the missing link you can see how I perform this brillant Chris Kenner effect. vinny |

Misdirection. If the audience's attention is on the bands during the setup, you're doing it wrong. You need to engage them in conversation, such that their attention is guided away from the bands, and you can then get away with murder.

Ok thanks. I realised misdirection is a strong component. Just wondered if anyone had any other methodological tweaks to the handling. Perhaps a large sneeze as you get set-up

Please can you tell me what is the effect?

The effect is two contrasting colored rubberbands link and then unlink, but the performance looks incredible. Dan Harlan can do the "setup" in about .5 seconds, but still uses misdirection to cover. Practice the effect, (which is also fun), and your setup time will improve.

Joseph, I'm starting to believe you now. I've never seen a performance of it before, but as I practice, its getting faster and faster. Perseverance is the key. Shouldn't take too much misdirection if you can do it in 0.5 secs!

When I perform this I set up right in front of the spectator, but the back of my right hand is covering the dirty work; plus I'm talking to them during the set up so the focus isn't on my hands. When I come out of the set up I'm flexing the bands, so if any movement was seen peripherally during the set up, the spectator probably assumes that it was simply this flexing. Great trick!

In Kenner's book he says that this routine was his greatest creation.
I'd say that the routine is just about perfect. There are a couple of killer displays where people standing inches away can see that the two bands are clearly linked. WOW! If you haven't seen this routine performed the right way then you're really missing some powerful magic. Good Luck. |

After hearing MJ Marrs' comments about using the back of the hand, I am starting to play with the idea of showing the two bands stretched parallel to one another *genuinely* with the set-up in front of the spec, then patter with back of hand to spec while I go into set-up. When I show the bands again they look in exactly the same state as a minute ago, and all I've been doing is play with them.
It is a beautiful thing. |
