I get this weird feeling that if somebody doesn't go over well, and we get the impression it's because he's SO out of date, that he probably wouldn't have played well back in his supposed era either.

I just read the rules and all it says is this: ...load an avatar (photograph of YOU that will appear in all the posts that you make on the Café) and a few other choices. If you have any trouble loading your avatar... I didn't read anything about being "current"?! So, does that mean, not only if they don't like what you write, but if they don't like the way you look, off you go? Must be a slow day?! |

There's a whole separate topic on the subject, at:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=39&0 The pertinent rule appears to be: "When choosing your photo, we ask that you use one that best represents how you look now. I do not want to see a photo of you when you were a baby, or a small child, or taken 20 years ago when you were in the army." I made the same mistake myself, I read the basic "Forum Rules" but didn't look down the list of topics to see the one specifically addressing avatars. Don Anyway, considering the topic, this looks like the appropriate place to post these: http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r124/......1969.jpg http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r124/......rip1.jpg

Okay, my photo is back.
That's me with Burt, aka The Great Burtini. Stay tuned: you'll see more of him as soon as I can negotiate a deal with his agent.

Speaking of television magic, did anyone see Mac King on the letterman show last night his standard act but seemed to be received very well. Mac is awesome!!

I saw Mac King on t.v. last night on Letterman, although it was actually in the morning here in Japan the day after because of the time difference. I get American T.V. channels because I work on a Navy base. He did two tricks - one where he used goldfish, and another where he put a paper bag over his head, turned around a few times, then crunched up the bag, making it appear that his head was momentarily gone. Nice presentation, good job Mac!

Some magicians will never be 'dated' because they do, or did, their own thing. One person that comes to mind immediately is Don Allen. If your presentations are original, you'll never hear "I saw that before."

I'm back from the netherworld, and feeling ornery.
Tuxedos. Who wears a tux? James Bond? A magician? Assistants in tights. Who wears tights? Women in the circus? Magician's assistants? Sponge balls. Can't we use sponge eggs, or sponge dice, or sponge insects, or sponge doorknobs, or sponge coffee saucers? Rabbits. Nuff said. Glitzy props. Nuff said. Jerking one's head upward at the end of a trick to signal it is time for applause. Nuff said. And Geez, I mention the Michael Douglas show and at least one person missed the point: I wasn't dissing Michael or his show; I was saying that a typical magician still dresses like a guest star on the Love Boat. And don't counter me with Jeff McBride, because while he may be talented and great and wonderful and everything else, if he were sitting here with me tonight and having a beer I would still tell him, "Dude, get some decent threads!" Of course, he would laugh at me, because I would be sitting here dressed like Roy Rogers, and we would both spit beer through our noses and laugh at all you Café people who don't seem to have the slightest idea what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the "lounge" magician. It doesn't matter anyway. I'm off to bed soon. |

Vick, COOL threads on your avatar.
Your avatar, in fact, says more against what I'm talking about than anything else. You look great. My compliments. |

Stoneunhinged - thank you very much
I agree with you 100%. And can expand what you've said to include most props so called magicians use.
