I've been asked to repair an original Jack Hughes Snake Basket. With the exception of one of the balls, which is easily replaced, it's complete, and even has the original "Supreme Magic" instructions.
It has suffered from some woodworm attack, it doesn't seem active at the moment but I'll treat it anyway. The main operating lever has suffered the most and will have to be replaced, and although most of the mechanism appears to work, many of the metal parts are a bit rusty. My question is... how far should I go with it's restoration? I could easily rebuild the entire mechanism, but should I endevour to keep it as original as possible? I must add that I am amazed by Jack Hughes' ingenuity and am a great fan of his work and fortunate enough to own a couple of his props. While typing this it's at home in my workshop, and I forgot to look up the date it was originally sold (it will say on the "copyright" bit in the instructions.) If anyone has an old "Supreme" catalogue, I'd be facinated to learn what it was sold for originally. Its a fantastic prop and the number of "functions" it performs (all manually operated) is amazing! |

Replace the parts that don't work and clean the rest without making them look too new..... unless that's what the owner wants.
Collectable may have a different meaning then "Show worthy"

Magic John,
Love to hear how this turned out for you. I have one that is in FANTASTIC shape and love it almost like a child. Its kept in a climate controlled room inside a padded case. It came with some Really old typed instructions but I'm not sure if the are the original or not. Can send some pic's if you like. Best, Brad

John,
I'd contact Chance Wolf on this if I were you. He's done an extensive amount on research and development to come up with his Snake Baskets. I'm sure he'd give you some pretty valid points to consider; as well as, tips to help your restoration process... -Bryan |
