What does "ff" stand for when you see it in the index of a book?
Thanks. |

I think it means following-folio or a spread of pages.
Rather like The Food Guide 800pp means 800 pages, so... 2-10 ff means go read pages 2 through 10 |

Wow, I didn't know that. Any idea what SIC stands for? I know it's not "Spelling InCorrect" as most people say.

William:
It's Latin, and while I don't know the exact translation, it does indicate two things: 1. The spelling is incorrect, and 2. The person who's reporting the original passage knows the spelling is incorrect, but has chosen to leave it that way.

Here's the Latin definition:
so, thus, in this or that manner, in such a manner, in the same way or manner, in like manner, likewise, to this or that extent or degree, to such a degree, in this or that state or condition, in such a condition |

I think the key part of your definition is the part that reads, "in this or that state or condition."

You are, as always, on target. Perhaps one of the most famous uses of the word is from John Wilkes Booth, who shot Lincoln. As he jumped from the Presidential balcony at Ford's Theatre, he shouted, "Sic temper tyrannus." (For those of us who aren't Latin scholars, it means, "thus ever to tyrants.")
