It's a shame to take a nice wood prop..built in decent wood.. and paint it black and chrome... makes it immediately look like a magic prop... and when performed against a black backdrop (and I'm sure it will be) it will just make it a bit harder to see.. even with the silver.. and in a black suit. he might as well just blend in.

For better or worse, it appears that he was going for that "magic prop" look.

What's wrong with a "magic prop" look? When people go see a magician, they expect a magic prop. they don't expect everything to be borrowed and impromptu.
You can't really say: "Sir, would you happen to have an assistant's revenge box in your pocket? I want to show that none of this is set up." or "This is an ordinary ungimmicked assistant's revenge box, just like the ones in your living room." |

But why are "magic props" heinously ugly? Why not something NOT black and chrome.. What made magicians think that painting stuff black and chrome... or putting fringe on.. or prismatic paper look "magical"
Remember that in the early days of magic... the shamans and the sorcerers were POOR... that's why all the bizarre guys distress their props. I'm not saying that everyone's props need to look non-magical... or distressed... I'm just wondering out loud what makes black and chrome tape look "magical" as opposed to making it look like swedish furniture... or something from an S&M dungeon... or just polished wood. |

Embrace change (and good taste)
A- Watch a few dozen clips on YouTube, from low end to high end magicians. B- Note what are things the same about tricks, décor, costumes, lines, styles. C- Adjust your act to be the exact OPPOSITE of these magicians. D- Once done with care, clear focus, and imagination your new act will book twice as much for better fees, guaranteed. There is a quote: “If you always do, what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.” Do you want to be a penguin magician among bland same-ole penguin magicians, or an individual with a fresh vision? Google McDonald’s logo and branding, then Jack in the Box logo and branding, are they exactly the same, or do they try to be unique? http://www.famouslogos.org/mcdonalds-logo http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=3072527 My holiday wish for you, Walt |
