I would love to see an attorney for the school system defending that wizadry is real. That would be a hoot for our educational system!

I would hope the Judge in this case, if it goes to trial, is an intelligent person and would set everything straight.
But if he or she is part of that countie's culture, it might be a different story. BTW dealing with school districts is like dealing with dictators, they are right until you can prove them wrong and then they are still right until a higher court forces them to behave.

...and yet, today, while I was in an English class, the students were disappointed their test took up the entire class time, and I was unable to do a magic trick for them!
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

In today's schools it is much more likely that a principal will side with a tempermental parent rather than stand up for a teacher, much less a substitute. Many teachers I work with complain that their principal (this is a principal for a 5-6 grade elementary school I am specifically thinking of) will not support teachers in parent/teacher conferences dealing with disruptive students. He will stand firm with his decisions, but not back up the teacher when faced with the tyrading parent.

I would think that this is more of a problem that we as US citizens are at fault for because we sit back and allow things like this to happen. Most figure it is not their problem and let it go at that. Look at how much funding is being taken away from our schools right now, and most of us sit back and allow it to happen...not saying everyone but think about it.
On the other side though, I believe that Pasco County had also tried to stop the Harry Potter movies from being shown. |

As one who's wife is a middle school teacher, it's scandalous that a teacher would try to get the attention of those precious little children while they are in school! How dare them.
Mark. PS - I think it's totally ridiculous and hope, as Photius said, he owns that school system one day. |

Many years ago, when I was about to start a restaurant gig, religious fanatics called the restaurant to protest. Why do I get the impression that God "rolls his eyes" at organized religion? Okay...so I know why, but the forum is too PC for me to state my opinion.

There's a reason that fark.com has a Florida tag. This is exhibit A perfection for that special designation.

I read about this story wen it happened and too was appalled that in this day an age there are still people prone to magical thinking and actually believe that there are such things as demons and wizards Faith, at least how I understand its supposed to work, is something that should add value to ones life and make one feel that they are part of something greater than themselves. It's poorly served when it limits your ability to be rational, think critically and let you go through life with philosophical blinders on.

Believe it or nuts, I also sub part-time here in the land of the rat (Orlando to be specific), I I've looked into this, and....as many posters seem to beleive...there IS more to it than just the toothpick trick. If there was nothing but that, and the D.A. tried to prosecute...the 'D.A.' would stand for 'dumb-***'! This guy apparently had a diciplinary rap-sheet a mile long. Innapropriate internet access, going off lesson-plans, etc.. Kelly staffing (the service that handles sub-positions) decided that this was the last straw.
I used to use magic in the classroom all the time during my sub-assingments, but finally an intern complained, I caught heat for it, and I've never done it since, but that was my first and thus-far only reprimand, so I kept my job. The 'wizardry' complaint is coming from the county (Land-o-lakes) not Kelly-staffing. I've never been out to that neck of Florida, but this stinks of the 'religious-right' if you ask me.......which you hav'nt.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

The use of magic, or art, telling stories to the children etc. all come second to the lesson plan of course. I feel that if those embellishments aid in classroom control or give added instructional value, AND do not cause undue excitement, then substitutes should use them (I do frequently).
I do know that it can bite you somewhere though. I am working on my Masters degree in education to become an elementary teacher. I have been doing classroom observations once a week. One class I arranged to observe in had to cancel because after the first day I visited, the class took a week to settle down. This class had some very excitable students in it, but did result in my having to rearrange a 2nd grade class in which to observe. As for substitute discipline, I know of a few people who were dismissed as substitutes, but it had to do with excessive cancellations, inappropriate behavior (anger more than sexual) and so on. Not following a lesson plan is not, as far as I know, ever been a reason. But then again, in my area you can be a substitute with a GED, and you get paid $40 a day (with the GED), with a bachelors degree I only get $50 a day. So standards are pretty lax in the expectations of a substitute being able to present a lesson plan . . . ah Alabama!

I worked for six weeks as a supply (substitute) teacher a few years ago and found I was better to just follow the script. Otherwise indiscipline could follow. It also doesn't take much not to get repeat supply bookings.
Now I've a regular class I infrequently use magic and don't give away the secrets. If they want to book me then their parents have to contact me outside of school.
