I thought buying silks would be easy, wrong again. I need 18" silks, solid in color and "opaque", they must be "opaque, key word here! I don't know where to get them. The ones I have already purchased have been fine except they are all translucent and it seems they are all I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cost is really not a factor, unless the price is ridiculous.....

The most accessible for these I have found is to go to men's clothing stores, department stores, etc and look for 'pocket squares'. I just got a couple at Jos. Bank for $7.50 a piece, about 16" square. There are also an array of colors completely different from typical magic silks.

I don't think you really want magicians' silks. You are seeking an absolute cover. Lining "silk" is actually cheaper. Go to the Burlington Coat Factory Outlet and buy men's pocket squares made from lining. They were only $3.50 the last time I checked. Some are as large as 21". (Often they only have one good side. For lining that is acceptable.)
Good luck! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Abbott's silks and Dazzling Magic's silks are 8 momme. Most of the one's I have got from them are fairly opague. I can't say that all colors will be absolutely opaque, but they might be worth checking out.

Mine are 8 momme. I have also made 12 momme as special order or made double silks.
A lot of it depends on the color of silk and the way it used with lighting conditions. Contact me if I can help further. Richard

That opacity has been more than ample to use for cards, coins, and vanishing candles. Or, you may want a foulard type scarf, an actual ladies scarf. They are relatively cheap. Another source already mentioned are pocket scarfs, but they generally are not that large. I used to package my "pepsilkola" effect with an 15" square pure silk scarf. You can also just buy some fabrics, and don't worry about heming them. Let them fray and the fringe effect will be acceptible. I had the good fortune of buying pure silk from a tie manufacturer. I used to make the foulards for Rings n things. The opacity was good enough for McBride, and Burton to use for their zombie and mask routines. (actually was two layers black on one side and deep blue or red on the other, sewn and reversed). Lastly, you can just sew two silks together, then turn them inside out and iron them. This pillow case of silk will hide virtually anything, as the weave will almost never line up with the second layer. Short of actual back lighting, you won't be able to see thru it at all.

I make my own silks. I usually on Zombie foulards do two or three layers of fabric as needed and required by the performer.
There is a bunch of information on the website. Richard

Wow, you guys, Magic Ian and Richard and the rest, have been extremely helpful! This is my first time dealing with silks and I see I have got a lot to learn. I got burned on the first set of silks I bought, well not really, I got what I asked for, I just didn't realize they would be as see-thru as they were.
I guess I am kind of gun-shy now. All I was really trying to do was get some silks like the ones David Roth uses in some of his DVD's. I will be using them for coin work and it is necessary that the coins can't be seen underneath the silks. I guess I should have mentioned that from the start. Now I am thinking I went too far the other way. Live and learn I always say..... I give all you magicians credit out there! You make everything look so easy, when I have found a simple little thing, at least what would initially seem to be a simple little thing, like getting the proper silks for performing can be a task in itself. What I love about it is the great knowledge I have gained through trial and error and the awareness that I now have of the vast knowledge yet to be gained in this fascinating field.....

I did a hand painted silk for a guy that had zodiac symbols on it. He was using it for coin work. It was a darker green with yellow symbols.
I can get a variety of 12 or heavier fabric or I can dye the fabric as needed. You might be better off (money wise) looking for mens pocket square hankies. Richard
