Man, talk about beating a dead horse. Does this guy have any talent or original ideas at all? The one thing I loved about those specials is the goofy methods they exposed. Some magicians would perform the same trick, (occasionally with the same method) and people would have no idea.

Gaddy is correct...I just read in Genii or Magic magazine (can't remember which) that a new series is being produced and Valentino may be involved once again.

I thought Val said that magicians needed to give up the old tricks from 50 or 100 years ago and invent NEW illusions , so that's why he consented to do the first series of exposure shows , because it would clear the way for a glorious rebirth of magic with NEW magic . Presumably Val would be on the cutting edge of this glorious new era of invention now that the old stuff had been cast off . So, how many new illusions has Valentino invented over the past 10 years since he shot the first exposure show for Fox ? I wonder if he will be exposing his own inventions this time around ? (he must have come up with a lot of stuff over the past 10 years, right ? ) Well, I'm not holding my breath on that one ... |

My guess is that the networks are relying on magicians to get mad and express their opinions publicly so they can once again claim "the show magicians don't want you to see".
I'm hoping we learned from the past and don't pay any attention to the show and it's assumed effect it may have on our performances. |

Good point. I thing we'll have to ignore the show.
Magic is a vanishing art.

Well, I'm not really saying ignore the show as in don't watch it. I'm actually saying not to respond to the show. As in when "Joe" public asked what you think, don't let on there is any problem with it effecting our performances. If we say, show or demonstrate in any way that we hate it and want it to stop, the public, especially the media will pick that up and read in that the show does hurt us. Which unfortunatly will cause them to be more interested to watch upcoming shows.

Don't waste your breath. Treat it like yesterdays' news. And it is.
"Exposure" specials thrive on contreversy that they exploit to the fullest. I'm suprised so many brilliant individuals took the bait during the initial run of the Valentino series. The producers of the shows deliberately baited the magic community by having the smarmy narrator paint Magicians as Bad guys, "duping the unsuspecting public" for profit. Oh please. People know what they're getting when they see a Magic Show. They are willing to pay for it not because they think it is real, but because like all Theatrical art forms, it can be intriguing, mesmerizing, touching and fun. During the first run when the series people were publicly sued, they played it up to the hilt and laughed all the way to the bank. The free publicity to the series made it onto showbiz columns round the world and shows like ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. Only when Valentino was exposed did the series come to a screeching (whimpering?) halt. No, Magic didn't die. This series won't hurt it in the long run either. My opinion is just "Don't take the bait". Here is my response, you are invited to use it if you want. Whenever people ask me what I thought of the specials I would just say "I don't care.. they're only showing you old methods anyway. There is one thing the producers are NOT telling you (I see their eyes widen with extreme interest, "Whats' that?") ...That there are always 5 or 6 ways to do any trick! Even if you see it onstage you'll still be fooled!" It's amazing how quickly they accept this and mentally move on. The public HATES to be sold old stuff in the guise of cutting edge TV. Imagine if every Magician were that blas'e about it. Those exposure types would come off as what they were. Loser hacks selling hemerroid cream and used cars. "Exposures" have always come up in magazines, TV what have you. They are annoying but forgettable in the long run. Only those with extreme interest (who often become magicians themselves) seem to be able to retain the methods long-term. Many in the viewing public either decide they WANT the thrill of suspending their disbelief and turn off or forget the shows, OR they find themselves amazed at what Magicians go through to produce a magical effect (and then of course, eventually forget the details as well). Valentino? Who cares. I'm still waiting for all those "Groundbreaking New Illusions" he promised to deliver (and never did) on his swan song special. whats it been? 12 years? It will be interesting to see another "Masked Magician" go and expose his secrets as well, if by some miracle, they ever come to be. |
