A friend told me that if you play the new Blockbuster game Grand Theft Auto 4 you can watch magic in the game if you visit a night club/caberet. Cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkb2ZxaNCww |

I was called to audition for the game and I told them I don't do auditions anymore ....I told them I need to get paid for the audition ..(It works ..I have been paid many times for these types of things) ....I asked them why they needed a real magician and not just an actor...they had no answer ....A week later I got a call and they said I had the job ...no audition needed ...they auditioned many actors and they needed the real thing ...They needed a magician thay had large scale gear ...ect ... They wanted me to bring my large scale tricks...about 4 of them and perform them on the motion capture studio.... about 5 hours of work, my Illusions ,my ideas.....The fee was only $200.00 dollars above actors scale pay ..... about $1000.00 I told them where to put it .....
Now you know why this company makes so much money..... Magicians need to stand up and stop working for peanuts.... |

Wow, surprising they only paid that much for the gig. Maybe someone would be more inclined to do because they'd "Get to be in a video game", although I agree at that level of business, the pay on magic should be higher.

Keep in mind that they have to pay hundreds of people to make this game. That includes, programmers, graphic artists, testers, managers, and the list goes on. Now add all the actors(some well known in some games) all the ascap rights for the music. These titles cost a lot of money to product, in fact Grand Theft Auto 4 cost around 100 million to make, now of course they will or have already made that back. This is direct from one of the Take Two producers. Take Two Producer Leslie Benzies reckons development costs ran into the $100 million dollar range (plus or minus a few mill): "It's like making a theater production, a few movies and an album all to fit into one package,' he says. He hasn't a clue how much GTA IV has cost to make but hazards a guess at $100m. About 1,000 people have had a hand in developing it. The perfectionism Houser and Benzies demand of their teams is astonishing. For GTA IV, time-lapse cameras were set on rooftops in New York to capture the correct intensity of the rain. Over 100,000 photographs were taken on location." 100 million just to produce a video game, crazy! Sickmagic |

100 million to produce it, yes. However, in its first week of release, GTA IV became the best-selling piece of entertainment in history. Yes, bigger than any music album, movie, etc. It brought in $500,000,000 (half a BILLION dollars!) in world-wide sales in its first week alone.
Now THAT's impressive! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV

Hey Cardone, so did you do the gig, or did your turn it down? I could't tell by your post in that you said you got it but told them where to stick it. It sounds like you turned it down and didn't actually do it. Or are you saying you did it, but just told them nasty words when they offered you your paycheck? So I must ask did you do the gig? Im just curious, as I own the game for the Xbox 360 and my friends have already told me that there was a magic act in the game, but I have yet to come across that part(I don't get much time to play vids). But it would be cool to know who it was when I finally see it in the game. I love video games, and how cool would that be to perform in one. I probably would have done for free, just to be in a video game. Ive been an actor with speaking roles in movies television, comercials etc, but never have been in a video game, I think that would be totally cool, simply because I have never had the oppourtunity to do such a gig. Film and television, yeah been there done that, and would want to be paid well to do it agian, but a video game, that's pretty neat! But that's just me.

I did not do it.. .they told me I would get exposure and I told them .....thats what homeless people die from....
I turned it down for many reasons ..... I wanted to stand up for the working pros that jump when they hear the word TV or exposure ...if we would stand up a bit ...we could get the bar up many notches ...I did a reality show last month that will air in the fall ...they wanted me.. and I stood my ground on my fee, risking loosing the job ..well I got my fee ....I feed a family of 4 with my magic show business and it makes my decision making very easy ..... Thanks for the web site comment Mats ! My site took a year to build and I'm very happy with it ! Good magicians are more than just actors ....Lets stand up for the time and sacrifices we have all put to pursue this art form ..... |

I don't blame you one bit Cardone, all I was saying about me personally that I would have found the experience much different than anything I had ever done before in my own career and mixed with the passion I have for video games, would have made the job priceless for me. But like I said, any other venue than yes I am just like you Cardone. But unfortunately there is also a lot of bad magicians out there which people are used to seeing and they too make it hard for us to get top pay in our industry, unless they have seen your act before, otherwise the hear the name magician and associate you with most of the bad ones out there.
I used to approach companies all the time who were like, "A magician? We had one last year and he was terrible, no thanks!" So then I would show them some promo material or invite them to one of my shows, and then they would be like, "Wow that is way better than the guy we had last year, how much?" So unfortunately, its not neccessarily magicians working for less money than others that creates the problem, its the fact that there are also a lot of poor performers out there that give the rest of us a bad name and thus, we are not often viewed as a high paid talent. I have the same kind of experiences Peter ......
There are a lot of guys who can do great magic tricks but are lousy entertainers ...and a few of them are well known pros who command a high fee....... this is the way it is ...so I guess we must do our best and work hard. |

There is a sword swallower too? Is he in the club? Haven't seen him either. There is a tv set in your appt where you can save the game etc., but you can also watch TV in the game. These are full length tv shows(parodys and spoofs) complete with commercials and infomercials, but very entertaining to watch. And on the TV I saw stand up comedians and they were pretty good. I look forward to seeing the sword Swallower and the magician in the night club.

The game rocks
