Anyone ever seen a magic act while the magician dances with his assistant. I think silk magic would go very hand in hand with this idea. What do you guys think? Also, any ideas for turning a an ordinary janitor's mop or broom into a woman?

Rdbateman,
You can dance to every kind of magic, aslong as it enhance and supports the act, trick or effect. Joanie Spina, ex choreographer of David Copperfield points this very well out in her "teaching" videos. If you can include the objects you use for the magic in the dance it would even be better. For me silks are aswell a very good exemple. Watch for exemple David Copperfield and his "After Hours" Illusion. The moves with the large tissu sheet (blanket) are looking very fluid. An exemple of Joanie Spina's work. Oliver. |

I played around with this for several years back in the late 80's - early 90's, and several routines and possibilities really began to take shape. It can definitely work well.
If you want to do this, start by finding a good stage choreographer. Not a dance teacher, and not somebody from the local community college, but someone who works on musicals and such for a living. Then sit down with this person and watch several magic acts in the same genre as yours: stage manipulation, small illusions, or whatever. Once he or she understands what you're trying to do, the ideas will start flowing. You may need to "audition" a few choreographers until you hit it off with one of them, but that's okay -- they're used to this. The cost? Hold off on buying one illusion for about a year. It's so funny. Back when I was playing with this, I was in one dance class or another three or four nights a week, and had been doing so for a couple of years. So of course I didn't think I needed a choreographer. Until I started watching the routine on video and realized I really needed some experienced help with it.

Yes dancing and while doing magic has been done very successfully, a young (then) man of color did very well at the conventions for several years. Cannot remember his name, but I am sure he is still performing. He was always the talk of the conventions at Abbott's Get-Together and S.A.M. conventions.
There is a young man in Vegas doing magic while singing. They did a big article on him some years back in Genii. |

For me personally, I feel a magician shoud look outwardly to be able to apply non magical skill sets to the magic that we do. It makes te magic so much better and gives out audiences something more to enjoy. Like layers on a pizza, the flavos from the layers show through and allow each person to enjoy something different. I feel the same is true to magic.
We can learn to take things like dance, pantomime, martial arts, theater, music, juggling etc. and apply them to the magic we do. it makes the magic more unique and more fascinating and it opens the dors to creativity. Kyle

I remember in a close up event where my wife and I were working the set together..(unusual as she is usually behind the scene... It was right after we were married...During a coin routine...with Fly me to the moon playing...we did a short turn / steps around the table...
(never have won any magic contest...but always got high scores on originality) I woke up in the middle of the night a few weeks before the performance...and told her we were going to put in a dance...She smiled and said better write it down or you will have forgotten it by morning...
