Have been toying with some ideas this weekend and thought I'd share some of the thoughts I had.
First I came across this in my normal non-magical web browsing: http://www.botanical.com/botanical/article/incense.html Once upon a time when I was single, I used to make perfume for young ladies I was wooing. It often went over a lot better than stock gifts like flowers and the like, and was often cheaper for my broke self to churn out a good product. I still do it from time to time for my partner, but her nose is really too well developed for it to be anything more than a "nice thought" from me. But the skills are pretty easily acquired and I got to thinking about the effects of custom scents in a spooky presentation. how interesting to get the smell of brimstone or ozone to emerge at a particular moment in your presentation, and all of it masked by the fact that you're already burning incense to help create your atmosphere. Before an effect, perhaps one could subtly slip a bit of off smelling incense into a censer. would take some practice, but I think that using scent to heighten a presentation of a startling effect would be very, um, effective.
Mr. Quackenbush believes that there is no such thing as a good magic trick.

The olfactory sense is not used as much as it should be. Odors affect us from a primitive level on up to out rational associations of odors with events. I think there is a great potential here to enhance our performances.
In English: great idea! Bill

The idea of using Scents in performance, has been used by a few, to name some that I know of.
Karl Bartoni (Makes his own and has a book on it) Luke Jermay (Uses aftershave) Black Hart (Keith sells his) I actually use an Incense in all my bizarre Performances (Even Walk around) But making your own does sound like a good idea!! Just a side note the above may cause an Argument. |

Yes. I use incense. I also do "Scent of Darkness" using Gwyd's wonderful bottle. Baba has something in his book that you shouldn't miss. There are many other ways of using scents that, unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to try. There is a tremendous amount of potential here.

I have an effect in my "Bits and Bytes" ebook that uses scent. It is titled "The Perfume Test". In it, a spectator finds the 1 bottle filled with perfume among 3 others containing water.
For a review of "Bits and Bytes" check out: http://headinside.blogspot.com/2007/01/r......tes.html There's also another review in a back issue of Online-Visions. Also, on my The Devil Still Deals blog, there is a variation on the above in one of the B. Bizarre chapters. Sincerely, Dale A. Hildebrandt |

I'm going to experiment with using some scents from this new company at some upcoming seances. I'll see how it goes.
