I do use techniques that make the paint appear wet and sometimes I tell lies.” I feel that this clears up any misunderstandings, retains an element of mystery, and allows me to sleep at night. Greg,
Very interesting stuff. I remember reading about Houdini, even as he was debunking the alleged psychics, had people believe that HE was in denial about supernatural powers, that he was obviously able to de-materialize and the locks and the cuffs fell off and he whisped out of the chained boxes and rematerialized outside of them. But you are right: we should not make our decisions based on the extremes. The disclaimer debates have gotten very passionate and I have read all of them trying to make up my mind on this tricky issue (pun intended). As Greg and others have said, some people are going to believe regardless and others are never going to believe regardless. In other words for some people a formal disclaimer is useless and for others it is unnecessary. My own thinking in this area, and I am not a performer like many of you, is based the the Biblical prase, "For those who have ears to hear..." and that is to NOT have an official, formal dislaimer denying any real powers PERIOD, but to: A) Add at least one subtle but choice phrase right in the opener such as "in a theatrical production such as this..." or "this differs from other theatrical productions in that many of you will be participating too..." Again, this hints that this is a play rather than a genuine demonstration, but allows people in to suspend disbelief, and yet is subtle enough to be ignored or quickly forgotten if someone chooses to. B) Not to directly claim any psychic powers, but to parse the words carefully, "Many psychics claim the ability to locate lost people or objects..." instead of " I am now going to show you how I use my psychic skills to find lost objects." With all of skills at verbal subterfuge and double meanings, this is well within most of our abilities. C) At some point toward or at the end, use B to make the following statement, Part of which I borrowed from Doug Dyment, "If you were to watch and re-watch video tape of this presentation you would see and hear that I have never actually claimed to be using REAL psychic powers. It may seem that I did say that, but in fact, I made no such claims. You would also see and hear that I never DENIED using them either. I would urge every one of you to be skeptical about the possibilty or the impossibility of anything." Everything there is true, can be spoken with confidence and covers the bases while maintaining the mystery "For those who have ears to hear..." This seems to be right for me, and again, my disclaimer for you is that I am not a performer like many of you, so do what is right and comfortable for you. |

Whenever I paint a wall, I put up a little sign reading "For Entertainment Purposes Only."
That covers it ... right? Right? R

The wall was in a construction zone and the room smelled of fresh paint. The setting was enough without the sign, wasn't it?

Hey, I'm just an entertainer. If someone leans against that wall, it's THEIR fault. They should know better. Telling them to watch out for the wet paint just insults their intelligence ....

Here is what I suggest:
practice ment----- for 20 years and after 20 years then decide whether or not you will disclaim and what it would or would not include - in the meantime don't be too hasty - just get the requisite experience first and then decide. Too many make premature judgments and have 't been involved long enough to explore all the nuances and situations which may arise and how to handle them. Don't do things just because you believe one way or another - that is zealot thinking - at times useful and at times blind - do it through research, trial and error, and being and going around the block long enough and enough times to make an intelligent decision based on many factors. Emotion and ego being the least reliable. And, if you came from a magic or magician's background, wait another 10 years before deciding. |
