Here's my review of Gordon Bean's Bikers. First, the effects:
===== BIKERS - Shown front and back, four jokers change into four kings SEVEN KINGS (bonus routine) - The magician holds a group of kings. A spectator holds a group of jokers. After a series of transformations, the magician ends up with the jokers, and the spectator with the kings. ===== Bikers involves a series of transformations from four jokers into kings where the final joker changes in the spectator's hand. The changes look magical and unexpected because the streamlined handling is very fair (as each joker is turned face down and then face up). You can a sense that you are "only" dealing with 4 normal jokers and yet one by one, each turns into a king. The overall premise also makes logical sense and the patter can reflect that (ie. The jokers are actually kings riding bicycles so in the end, they dismount and appear on their own, etc.) Gordon also includes 3 good ways to switch out the cards so that you've got 4 examinable kings in the end should you choose to hand them out to the spectators. In addition, he includes a method which "proves" that the kings are normal but does not involve switching out the gimmicked cards. Finally, Gordon shares some background and thinking behind Bikers and also credits some of the inspirations for it. Overall, it's a visual packet trick with well thought-out handling! Now if that wasn't enough, Gordon also includes "Seven Kings" which is the killer bonus routine. It's a card transposition between jokers/kings that are held in the spectator's hand and performer's hands. This is straightforward to perform (no knuckle busting moves) and will give the spectators several moments of magic in this well designed routine. There is also an extra idea for an entirely different finish so you can try that or stick with the original. I won't say too much more other than it's an excellent bonus to an already great trick. Like Bikers, another benefit of Seven Kings is that it can be performed in the hands (with your spectator's help) as it doesn't require a table. This makes it great for strolling/stand-up situations. In fact, Gordon mentions that Seven Kings was designed as a walkaround showpiece. Related to this is also the reset: Both Bikers and Seven Kings are essentially reset to be done again when following the handling steps. Bikers comes with: - 2 black, poker card-sized envelopes (nice little props in themselves) - 3 custom-printed (gimmicked) cards plus 1 spare, and 5 regular cards...9 cards in total, printed by the U.S. Playing Card Company - A detailed 10-page instruction booklet with 42 photos explaining the Bikers routine step-by-step - An additional routine which explains Gordon's handling of "Seven Kings" Gordon not only included all the cards for his "Bikers" and "Seven Kings" routines, but those same cards can also be used in a standard wild card routine. That's great thinking and it really packs more value into this effect. I have always been pleased with Gordon Bean's tricks - they're all very well thought out in terms of handling and presentation. Bikers is no exception. You can find it here: http://www.gordonbean.com/bikers.html From the website: Price is $19.95 plus $3.00 shipping and handling anywhere in the world. |

Any other story versions for this one? The knocked down Joker and becomes King is a good one, but perhaps someone has different touch?
Magic comes through perception. -HS
