Clink, clink, my new (1887) Morgan s***l is a bit noisy. It is a lot heavier than expected, and with that much metal, I sound like the Hunchback ringing bells. Twenty-five years ago I had a peace dollar s**** with a black strip on it. It dampened the sound. I don't know what it was, but electrical tape does not work.

Are you having this noise when it is nested or in the action of nesting?
I'm using teflon tape in some of my [ but I've even seen a very thin layer of cork in someones to dampen the noise. |

Hmmm.....I don't understand this noise problem with the e]. I use e]s all the time and for several various routines and either I have very good ones or I am a natural and I am doing everything right, because I have never been plagued by this problem. I use both dollar e]s and half dollar e]s and noise has never been an issue. I am not tooting my horn or anything, I just don't understand why the problem....hmmm.....

It's hard to say what the problem is without seeing what you are doing. Soooo, let's take a stab at it. For starters, you may be using to much pressure...try as light a touch as possible. The other problem could be the shell itself...who is the maker? Cheap shells tend to make bad noises...lousey sound due to the loseness of the real coin inside. Try scotch tape inside...that sometimes helps. You may consider investing in a better shell if you haven't already...try Lassen or Schoolcrat...very pricey, but you get what you pay for!

It happens during the slide. I work with Kenedy halfs and I don't have a problem. I don't recall an issue when I had the Peace dollar.
I wanted to have a higher visibility coin for stage work, so I am in the process of switching from the 50 cent piece. The gap is perfect for a drop or layover, but when I slide the coin, it telegraphs the sound. I've seen the cork and some type of black tape used. I experimented with electrical tape but it was too thick and it caused the [ to rock. It did dampen the noise.

Try thin packing tape, trimmed carefully on the underside of the coin.

I think a little less pressure when un nesting or nesting might stop any noise issues..Personally I haven't had this problem .Even cheap shells I have had in the past have been ok.
Maybe you are focusing on some think that really is not a problem ,could be magicians guilt that's making you think it's loud. Best Blade.
If you put the time in....you will achieve ...

The packing tape took the ring out. Thanks. I'd still like to find a very thin cloth tape. Black would be preferred. I'm heading out to Walmart now.

Interesting thread, I happen to have some noise problem with the ES. While I do the nesting and unnesting, sometimes it does make a little sound, sometimes it is silent.
Does the problem come from my bad handling ? or is it the shell ? |

Glad to hear the packing tape worked out for you. Let us know if you find a cloth tape thin enough. It does have to be super thin.

One thing you could do is "drown out" the shell noise with some timely patter. If you know you are getting to a critical point in time during your routine it wouldn't hurt to start doing some talking or a quick cough at the right time or something.....

I think I am bad handling it. My shell comes from one of the two top coin makers and while un-nesting there is a little cling sound.

I used Green Toad (or Frog) painter's tape. It is very sticky and thin. Problem solved. If I don't like the green color, I use my Sharpie on it.
Again I'm using a Morgan ES - I don't have problems with the other ES's.
