Neil Tobin’s Supernatural Chicago (Ongoing)
Between gigs in Chicago I was able to catch the Neil Tobin (Necromancer) “Supernatural Chicago” show at the Excalibur Nightclub downtown. He’s been running the show for about five-years now, and from the polish and audience rapport you can tell he’s got it down to a science. I’m often disappointed when I attend an out-of-town show and so did not get my hopes too high, although Neil’s comments here on the Café have always been on the money. Well, it was a fantastic night of theatre and magic! You can tell Neil has a profound fascination with the Supernatural and is proud of all the weird goings-on in his hometown Chicago. His presentations are original, smooth, and most of all captivating…. and all that adds up to solid entertainment. The audience of about two-thirds tourists and one-third locals just ate it up… and were anxious to participate during the interactive segments. Neil has a well schooled and almost intuitive knack for selecting just the right spectator to !@#ist with just the right piece, and is also skilled at avoiding those who’ve enjoyed a few too many drinks. This performer truly knows how to control and cue his audience! His dress and demeanor are clean and elegant, and he makes the most of his historic nightclub venue. Both the Magic and the Mentalism are on-the-money, being very deceptive and very engaging, and even without those bells and whistles, the spooky stores could stand on their own….. a rare accomplishment in Bizarre Magick. It takes stamina and skill to present a show over a five-year period, and keep it fresh and growing, and like a good red wine Supernatural Chicago has aged and mellowed beautifully into a rewarding evening of unusual theatre. This is the kind of show that can give Magic back its good name. My “muggle” brother also had a wonderful time, and was floored by the effects, he found he had to pay close attention to a few of the transactions from story-to-magic, but it’s good to make today’s “pastured television audiences” do a little thinking and work to earn their evening’s entertainment. At a mere $25 per-person (less than parking in downtown Chicago) it’s a huge bargain….. and that includes two-drinks and admission to the dance club after the show….. I’d charge a lot more for these high caliber thrills and chills. If you’re in Chicago, and you love good shows, be sure to catch this one! Besides having a heck of a good time, you’ll learn a lot about audience control, making material your own, and keeping a high-quality show going. Thanks Neil for a great evening! You can find out more at http://www.NecromancerEvents.com ….and I can’t wait to pick up a copy of Tobin’s CD “Peter And The Werewolf” his unique take on the Prokofiev classic. Magically, Walt |

You're very kind, Walt. It was a pleasure having you in the audience.
Best, Neil P.S. Now, if only the language filter didn't turn all your apostrophes and quotation marks into question marks, and innocent words like a-s-s-i-s-t into an unholy stream of expletive marks

I've just been YELPED!
If you haven't heard of it, Yelp is an online community that reviews local businesses and attractions. And today, one of the guests at last week's Supernatural Chicago performance posted a review here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/supernatural-chi......4CSqvz8w In time, I'm hoping it amasses the kind of buzz on a local level that the show has already generated among out-of-towners at travel powerhouse Tripadvisor.com: http://chicago-hotels.tripadvisor.com/At......ois.html Best, Neil

Amazingly, Supernatural Chicago just keeps going and going. It's currently in it's sixth straight year of performances and remains one of the top attractions in the city according to TripAdvisor.com, which is really kind of ridiculous -- I mean, it's ranked in front of the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Art Institute -- but who am I to argue? Read these AMAZING reviews:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Re......ois.html AND NOW AT THE NEWSSTAND: Shore Magazine is running as its 12/09 feature story an article on the history of magic in the Chicago area and its current crop of public performers! Supernatural Chicago is there, along with some of my favorite people in the magic community. All in all, it's one of the most impressive magic articles to appear in a mainstream publication in recent memory. Can't find a local newsstand carrying Shore Magazine? Here's the online version, along with an accompanying Weekender video shot on location with me at Supernatural Chicago's home, Excalibur -- http://visitshoremagazine.com/2/?p=8848 (The video is in the right-hand column.) Enjoy, Neil

This seems to be a MUST SEE event.
Hope to get to Chicago to see it. Neil seems to be in a unique class all by himself in this field. If you get to Chicago and do not see this you have to be crazy. Dick

Winter break is over (we take off for holiday parties in December) and the show's back up and running. I hope to see you on an upcoming Friday night!
