I initially hesitated spending $65 on a sight-unseen book about the history of magic illustration, but now I'm very glad that I did. For those of us who grew up learning magic from books and ordering magic from paper catalogs, this book will be a real eye-opener!
Mr. Romano covers his subject from the first known woodcut of the Cups & Balls in the Middle Ages, through engravings and lithographs (including a very good description of how lithographs are made), right up to the digital age. There are histories of well-known illustrators such as Tarbell, Nelson Hahne, Sid Lorraine, Ed Mishell and more. I'm only about 20% of the way through the book, but I have no doubt that the remainder is just as good if not better. Mr. Romano writes well, and the book is well illustrated with many examples of magical art. The book is actually the second edition of the original, which was issued in a limited edition of 500 copies several years ago. The new edition is also being issued in a limited edition of 500 copies, so if you want one, you ought to move quickly on this. BTW, he has done some good research on the infamous Egyptian "cup and ball" painting that was found in a pyramid, and was assumed for many years to be a depiction of a performance of the Cups & Balls. He presents convincing evidence that it's actually two bakers, using bread molds to bake bread. Sorry folks, now we'll all have to change the opening lines of our C&P patter! This really is a terrific book. Having missed out on the initial run, I was glad to see the limited re-print. Anyone interested should probably make haste; I don't imagine that these will be available for very long.

Sethb, do you know if there is any variation with the first edition, such as more or differente contents? I own already the first edition, and is a nice book, with a subject hard to find in books about the art of magic.

Yes, this is a revised edition. It contains all the same content as the first edition, and then after each chapter, there is a new section that updates and sometimes supplements the original material.
I thought this was an interesting way to bring the contents of the book current. You'll have to decide whether this justifies purchasing the revised edition. SETH

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm glad you like the book. The book was released a little over a month ago and I have about 100 copies left.
I have made several changes and additions to this edition. I added a section at the end of the chapters called "Reflections" which brings the book up-to-date. It was 11 years since the first edition was published so a lot has changed. These sections contain new artwork and photos. I also took out some images that were in the first book and added some new ones to the original chapters. The chapter on lithographs has new art and I also added an appendix of my own artwork. The chapter on fine art also has expanded quite a bit. The book is hard bound with a full color dustjacket and has printed endpapers. It is a signed and numbered edition from 501 to 1,000. The first edition was limited to 500 copies. You can pick up a copy from your favorite dealer or from me directly at http://www.chuckromanomagic.com Click here to view attached image. |
