Seeing Tom's boxes in picture form is one thing. Seeing them with your own eyes, up close and personal, is a visual feast. "Superb" is the only word that describes the craftsmanship and the artistry of his Okito boxes. I am now the proud owner of one of them. It is the crown jewel in my collection.

Very impressive Tom. I also like your shells for the 3 shell game but you already know that.

Fortasse,
I'm so glad you were pleased. All the magic items I make are a labor of love and very limited. I hand tune each box until they work flawlessly, then freehand the design and hand engrave them. I understand that what I make is not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who appreciate my work I'm thankful. I also want to give a big thanks to Frank, he understands what goes into making quality good, because he makes great items too.

Just a note to say that the quality of work Tom puts into his natural shells for the 3-Shell game is on the same level as his amazing Okito Box work.
I don't do this type of coin effect, but I use Tom's shells every day. For shells, there are none better than Tom's. Beautiful stuff Tom!! |

An Okito Box arrived today. The Box very well made, perfect weight in heavy Brass. Handling is perfect.
At the risk of repeating what has already been said, the Engraving is beautiful!! This Box is a worker that will see lots of use. Thank you Tom. |

As far as the audience is concerned no one in his right mind would alter such a nice object. You also subtly express tht the trick you're about to do is not a cheap beginner's trick: you give value to the effect and to your performance by using a valuable prop. This is known by magicians from very old times nd Chevalier Ernest Thorn is known amongst magicians for having used very nice hand made props and illusions. Actually I had a chance to see the press that he was using for his playing cards (cards didn't have the quality they have now): it was engraved and was a real piece of art. So the question is not a problem of collectors. It's a problem of image. Let's take the example we have here. This engraved box is not an Okito coin box (even though it is): it's a nice genuine pill box. As a matter of fact coin boxes do not exist in real life. Thus the routine could start by emptying the pills from the box explaining why you need pills (even if they are only M&M) and creating an emotional atmosphere. Then close the box (maybe loading a coin as the cover is replaced). Then introduce your silver coins and relate their size to the inner size of the box (if needed hiding the coin already there, an easy task since you are referring to size and not to emptiness). Then start the routine... Hopefully this expresses why I think that the quality of the prop does help the deception. Now this is a free world...

I had a Boston box (and a regular non gaffed dupplicate) made in Paris by a jeweller which John Carney seemed to be really interested in at the FFFFF, even though at the time I had a routine but no proper script.
The gaffed box is a Boston box. It has a hinge and a locking device. The hinge holding the lid is however afixed exactly at the middle of the outside hight of the box by a rotating fulcrum. This enables the lid to be rotated to close either over the box or over the bottom. The hinge and the locking device however suggest that the box is just a normal box and any magician would discard the possibility of that box to be an Okito box owing to the hinge and the locking device preventing the usual moves. I think that if I could input the Bob Swadling magnetic specifications, it would offer the best box combination on the market. But it's pain in the neck to build these boxes. I gave mines to a very nice Canadian magician (Joel Machtinger) who wanted to have it produced but he sadly died from leukemia, and I don't know where the boxes are. But they have been made and the hinge system is a beautiful convincer.
