Does anyone use this? I am planning to get this and use it together as a sequel with the Gypsy Mystery rope trick.
I have the Abbott's "Sack X". I hope this is not the same principle because it says that the sack can be examined after. The "Sack X" cannot be examined after. Check it out at: http://www.chameleonfabrications.com/

Hi Lou,
I would like to guarantee you that the Enigma Escape is NOT a Sack X. The method is totally different from the Sack X. You can have the Enigma Escape bag examined before and after the escape. In fact, I would encourage it because there is absolutely nothing to find. They can look inside the bag, turn it inside out, hold it up to the light, check every seam, they will find nothing. We recommend using a silk to tie the bag, however it can be done with a rope if you choose. It is done using only one volunteer and can be done totally surrounded. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks and all the best, Rob |

This is an oldie but goodie that the Wiz Kids have used for years (but the Wiz Kid escape artist makes his own props - it is an easy first sewing machine experience project). You can see Wiz Kid Escape Artist Qua-Fiki learning to add grommets around the top of his bag here: http://wizkidzinc.com/Qua-Fiki/Qua-Fiki-Fans.htm
While we call it a "Canvas Sack Escape" it is made from any tough fabric available at Wal-Marts or discount fabric stores. Qua-Fiki chose camouflage pattern cloth because it has a different look on the inside of the bag, so the audience can eaqsily see that the bag is turned inside out or right side in as it is examined. The grommets around the top also add a bit of extra deception I am not allowed to discuss, because it is a Wiz Kid invention. But it is the same sack escape mentioned in this thread: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=18&6 I can't verify invention by the Bambergs, but that era sounds about right for its origin. The Wiz Kids have been doing their version since the 1980's and Jim Gerrish was using it in his own shows in the 1960's.

Hi Spellbinder,
The Enigma Escape does not use grommets. The method is different than the Canvas Sack Escape. However, I know of a number of canvas bag escapes and I am basing this on the one that the grommets and rope play an intregal part of the escape. In the Canvas Sack Escape, I do not believe a volunteer can hold the top of the bag closed and in view of the audience during the entire escape. With the Enigma Escape, you can. Also, canvas would not be a practical material for the Enigma Escape. It would prove very difficult to use. Jim Steinmeyer gave us the history of the effect and he verified the Bambergs as first being given credit for it. I saw Doug Henning do his version of it well over 20 years ago. It was also Jim that verified that our version is different from both the Bambergs and Henning in that our version can be done totally surrounded. All the best, Rob |

I think you misunderstood me, Rob... not the first time I have been misunderstood, I asuure you. I merely meant that the Wiz Kids CALL their version of the sack escape the "Canvas Sack Escape," although it is not actually made of canvas. In the Wiz Kid version, grommets are used in the top of the sack, but it is NOT the same way they are used in other canvas sack escapes and I am not at liberty to explain why. Just take my word for it that it operates by the same principle as all the other various categories of this sack escape, and can be done surrounded, with a spectator (the Wiz Kids use two spectators) to hold the top of the sack. There's no competition (yet) because the Wiz Kids do not intend to release the secrets of their particular version any time soon and neither their version nor its secrets are currently on the market.
Leaping Lizards has found the correct reference to the bags under discussion. Tarbell, Volume 5, The Phantom Bag. The original bag escape it was modeled after was performed by Tobias Bamberg. Then David (Fu Manchu) Bamberg came up with this simple variation.

I did misunderstand your explanation. I don't know if the Wiz Kids actually use a canvas material, but it would not be practical with the Enigma Escape.
As I have previously mentioned, this effect was originally credited to the Bambergs. Doug Henning used the Bamberg version and added the borrowing of an item to take into the bag with you. Both of them needed two assistants to do the effect and it was extremely angle sensitive. Dani, in the YouTube version that was recently posted on a thread here, also used this method. We came up with a version that only needs one assistant and can be done surrounded and experimented with materials to get one that is durable, compact and deceptive. This makes it a far more practical effect in that you can do it practically anywhere. All the best, Rob |

I performed this for years, as written in Tarbell, but with a circular curtain. Only one assistant, and could be done surrounded. It is an awesome effect, and once again illustrates that all you need is Tarbell. Wink.
