I think listing yourself in there just so people can find you if they lose your number is just as good. YP in my area are getting pricey as the years go on...I have started and will continue to put more effort into adverts on the net and through PPC campaign as more people are turning to it rather than YP. Just my .02c, however I change my opinion all the time on this subject...lol. Michael |

I have never done YP ads. Just not the style of show I do or as Bob points out the type of traffic and calls I want to deal with.
Same goes for internet, though that does seem to be the way all are going now. I will say this though, not all markets suffer from this. The YP can be very usefull in certain regions in the country. I live in one of them. The smaller town type of shows, I can see that sort of thing working. I don't work in my town, but the YP ads probably help those guys a lot more.

Costumer phoned yesterday...
"I want to hire a magician for my company event on xxx. "Ummm , ergh, ... Oh I have never done this before...." (nervously stated the costumer) I replied. "NO problem, I have done it many of times, and I will help you through your first time." She giggled.... and I explained all the details... She replies, "may I phone you back in 25 minutes?" 3 hours later,,, Voicemail" "Oh sorry Curtis it took me so long, I want to hire you.... Phone me back..." Phone back today- After the booking details, I asked, "how did you find me?" "In the phone book... OHH, I mean the internet - those phone books are useless today." I couldn't find anything in the phonebook... So what does this tell us? -BOTH- or?

Tells us your client can't tell the difference in a phone book and the internet.
What exactly am I supposed to take away from that experience? Tells us your client has trouble with the phone book and maybe does not know the alphabet. Again what exactly can I take away from that? Actually it seems to tell us more about your client than phone books LOL.

Danny, she looked in the phone book first and could not find anyone and then she looked on the internet.
What you take away from the experience that clients are looking in both avenues.

Yes Curtis... Using my psychic powers..I see that your client is not too bright.
In the big picture the yellow pages are going the way of the dodo bird. They have a little life in them but not much. And I think even 20 years ago, most corporations looking for entertainment used entertainment bureaus, not the yellow pages. Richard S |

If you're going to buy a "yellow pages" ad, you might want to ask about their actual, verified distribution. Twice a year my apartment building, which has 32 units, gets nearly 100 Yellow Pages books delivered to the lobby. About 10 copies get taken by residents, the rest go into the trash. If they businesses who bought the ads think they are reaching 100 potential customers, they're sadly mistaken.

You be surpirsed how many companies find entertainment via internet and directories. Actually my client is very well known and she just missed spoked... I guess you guys never missed spoke and missed the point in the conversation... And what Danny Dole wrote is so on the point! It is amazing he as an expert on the YP when he wrote: "I have never done YP ads. Just not the style of show I do..." and he said: The YP can be very usefull in certain regions in the country. Hmmm.... Isn't that like someone writting a magic course and giving UNPROVEN second hand advise?

Referring to your earlier post, I think I see your point Curtis. Your customer looked in the phone book FIRST, but couldn’t find anything. I don’t doubt there are still some, especially older folks, who rely on the yellow pages. I guess you could adopt a strategy, “Well, if no one else is going to advertise in the yellow pages, I will and I’ll clean up! No competition!” That has some merit but if this TREND continues (the trashing of YP) and the current users of YP wake up and realize there is something called Google, then eventually that strategy won’t produce very much.

I Think Ken makes a valid point, but I think it is not so much a matter of "no one is doing it, so I can clean house", but more a matter of the industry and lifestyles changing. Poeple just simply are finding it easier to do searches online then pick up a big bulky book and look through it. It is easier and faster to simply use an online search engine or directory to do the same thiong and get faster results.

Ken,
I don't advertise in the YP. I think they are dead too.

I KNOW GUYS who are using the YP ads in smaller regions of this country, which I live in, and it works quite well. If you live in a small town, the internet is pointless to try to fill a local party you are having. Unproven? Hardly. I also know people like my wife who use the internet YP or Super Pages Plus to find things INSTEAD of the classic book. Something usefull to add (I know that goes against your need to pose and have everyone think your a headliner) would be for someone to figure out if the listing is the same in the online pages, as it is in the classic book YP ad. AND if that was usefull or not. I would think once they are online, they may use other search engines for entertainment. THAT is unproven and only a theory, but is intended to stimulate discussion, and to have people who know share. Hope you can see the difference Curtis. Do you REALLY wanna get into this? Wanna talk about contradictory statements? Or can we drop it? Up to you.

I suppose if you live in Podunk it is a usefull tool, but I HATE MA BELL the last time my cell phone bill was a week late they redirected all of my phone calls to their business office. My God what if I was trying to call AAA for a road call? I hate those greedy @#$%^&*@ they still think that theirs is the only game in town. I have cable land line service now, and when my cell phone contract with Verizon ends they can kiss my petudy.

Al you are right on man. The baby bells are quite annoying and they are RAMPANT in Middle America.
My only real point is that in smaller towns, when you have a company party, even if it is for John Deer, you tend to look locally. THIS IS HOW TOWNS LIKE THIS OPERATE. They are not as enthralled with the internet as the rest of the country. Call it "The Good Old Boys Network" if you will, but it exists. It is tough to understand if you don't live in it. BUT the idea is that if someone in town, or near town, locally does the service, why am I looking on the internet for it? This is NOT an unproven theory, it is an absolute geographic fact.

Danny, you absolutely right. I use it in my local non-magic business and would be lost without it. Why in the world would I search the world on the internet looking for a plumber, an electrician, or even the local entertainer, when all I have to do is reach over and pick up the book and phone.
Now a mom at home may have time to search, but businesses use the phone book. Many offices don’t even have internet access in them. And those that do it’s often restricted. The phone book will be around for awhile, it's too business friendly not to. We sit the phone on top of the book. Without it, where would we sit the phone. Tom

People have trouble imagining life any other way than the way they live it. Most people "historic perspective" starts with the day they were born.
It is a big world out there. Are times changing? ABSOLUTLY. But it does change slower in some places than others.

100% right Danny - I live in a regional city of just over 100,000 people and most entertainers here get most of their bookings through the Yellow Pages.
I'm not in it myself - have been in the past but it is not a good fit for what I sell these days but the book is under the computer desk and I frequently use it to access local businesses - it's usually much quicker to find a business or service in the local area in the YP than on the internet - and some local businesses have no net presence - the cabinet maker who did a beautiful job of making an illusion for me is a good example.
