MATS... Thanks so much for finding this video link. I had been trying to find it for YEARS. Fyi, for this version, on British TV, Bob Swadling was the "hidden" assistant.

Wow! Mr. Biro that was an awesome effect.
Did you say that you just GAVE it to Mr. Kaps for free? Amazing! |

Mr. Biro,
Was the handling you gave him released in one of the Genii articles? Thanks |

I gave many things to Kaps... GAVE... not sold.
We were very close friends, travelled and worked together often. The original concept/version was worked out using a briefcase alongside you for a close-up show. Kaps, created the handling working behind a bar, which makes it so much easier. His first gimmicks were made by our mutual friend Scotty York, but he settled on an improved version made by a friend in The Netherlands, Frans Biemens (I hope I spelled it correctly). Other props I created and GAVE Fred include an electric operated Devano Style jumbo rising card deck (Only three ever made), and my first set of Linking Coat Hangers.

I think a "brandy sniffer" is an alcoholic's therapy dog, perhaps. The glass that you are referring to is a brandy "snifter." These days, some shops selling to under-educated people may call them sniffers, but it's like saying "most unique," or "less calories." A million people saying it wrong doesn't make it right.

Does anyone know of a book or video that TEACHES how to put the ring on the string then inside the box to make it vanish?

The dvd Ring Leader with Gregory Wilson is kinda encyclopedic when it comes to ring and string magic. A lot of it comes from the mind of Ray Grismer.

Have any of you seen British Street Magician Dynamo (Steven Frayne) performing Ring on Wine Glass Stem? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2-MgpOEFkw&feature=related
This is an outstanding "impromptu-style" take on Pete Biro's / Fred Kaps's effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5o_q60KJRg Although I am familiar with Biro’s original handling (from Genii Aug 07), I have no idea how the switched glass has been gimmicked to undergo such scrutiny from the (annoying) ladies and the camera close-up. Dynamo (and his consultants) achieved what Bruce Kalver claims with his Ring on Brandy Snifter – “A borrowed ring is tossed at a brandy sniffer and instantly, it links onto the stem of the glass” with a close match. Thoughts? Ideas? |
