All right I’m very curious…
When a piece like Vanishing Bandana has been done, (maybe some say done-to-death) for decades by stars like Copperfield on TV and internationally, when it has been done in Las Vegas showrooms by many magicians, when it is constantly done by most of your direct competitors at every b’day party and school gig, when it seems to be a best-seller in every magic shop….. Why? Why would you want to put it, or keep it, in your show? Especially with this piece, where you’re dealing with a “set” recording and it’s therefore hard or nigh-well impossible to totally customize it and make it your own? In a world where there are thousands of effective wonderful pieces, and seemingly hundreds more marketed each year, why do what “everyone else” is doing and you find all over YouTube? The “oh, I use a blue bandana, and he uses a red bandana” logic just does not work for me. It is a clever, amusing, and strong piece of magic, but not that clever, it is basically built upon one sad little pun. a joke that was probably old in the days of Vaudeville. Instead of spending hours perfecting a “packaged” effect… why not spend those hours pouring through old magic books, finding something no one, or almost no one does, then writing or having written an original presentation all your own? One well known pro her in the Café wrote me and basically said, “you seem to hate everything, what do you DO in your show that’s so original?” I had to write back and say I can only add one new piece every one or two years, and it took a decade to build up just one special show. But, it is unique, and all mine…. I sent him sample scripts finally to prove it. It’s a huge world, magic! Why box yourself in with everyone’s Vanishing Bandana? Use your own imagination, be fanciful and creative, be YOU! Or, am I missing something crucial here? Can anyone convince me that the Bandana is an important thing missing in my life? My two-cent question/rant, Walt |

Hi Walt
>> When a piece like Vanishing Bandana has been done, >> (maybe some say done-to-death) Yes it has been done / over done but 99% of the time nobody in my audience has seen it. The age group of my target audience I may be the first live magic show they have seen (may be the second) >> Why would you want to put it, or keep it, in your show? For me it is a great opener and helps set the tone for the rest of the show AND the KIDS love it >> Instead of spending hours perfecting a “packaged” effect… >> why not spend those hours pouring through old magic books Nothing wrong with doing both >> Or, am I missing something crucial here? Yes... Each of us is different and has different styles and different preferances >> Can anyone co6nvince me that the Banana is an important thing missing in my life? No for you Banana is not important, and not missing. In fact it may not fit your style or the type of magic you do. Based on your post of who you are and how you work I would not expect you to do banana. Personal I enjoy doing it. Take Care And that is my 1.5 cents |

I find again and again, classics are classics for a reason. While I try not to have the same routines as local talent, the general audience will have not seen or remember seeing this routine.
While I bought the latest ME VB, I have not used it . . . yet. I do plan to put it in a show later. As for it being "packaged", as with any prop you buy, it is up to you to make it yours. Re-write/record it if you wish. With computer tech as it is today, this is very easy. You can also have an audience member read a set of instructions "live". |

It sounds to me like you've really taken the time to perfect routines that are truly your own. Still, while this is an audio enhanced routine there is still some creativity to be found with it. I use it and given the context of my show, which I've been working on for 3+ years, it works and makes perfect sense. I think that I could do more with it in terms of acting, more subtle responses but it still works (work in progress) for me. This routine is part of a series of 7 effects that link together to support my overall message. Each effect logically leads to the next and it's taken me a long time and a lot of to come up with it. It starts with the VB, then goes to Sean Bogunia's Animation Sensation, Snake Camera Surprise, Droodles, Bowlarama and then ends with an original routine involving a child from the audience. I'm sure that you've probably had the experience of your program evolving, developing, improving and then from there only little massages here and there. I'm currently considering changing ot and taking Bowlarama from its position and using it instead as an opener. I just need to find the right presentation/script for my Axtell Remote Controlled Drawing Board to take its spot. Still, given all of this I agree with your original comment in that we all need to find more original effects/presentations. For the VB, this will be next month when I start working with an Axtell Magic Chimp which has a variation of the original VB routine. So I'm happy to say that my bandana isn't blue but something that involves a animatronic puppet playing a trick on the magician. jeff |

I love Roberts ending on his VB routine with the "Fruit of the month Club".
We will be doing a "Cut and Restored Bandana" routine with the Hands-Free Magic Chimpanzee puppet. Robert Haas, Magic Al, Tom Ogden and others have all been a lot of help in the process of our research & development on the script. Ax

I just performed this yesterday for the first time and it killed. Why do I do it? I ENJOY DOING IT. It makes people laugh and entertains them. That is all I care about. I will never put someone down or question them for doing something they enjoy doing. If you like something, do it. Life is way too short...
Take care, Bryan |

I like the routine strictly from a comedy point of view because audiences love it and really laugh!

This is really an easy effect to do but it's not one that's easy to do well. I've found that my handling of this effect has changed quite a bit over the past few years since I've been doing it. Watch yourself in front of a mirror, video tape yourself doing this in front of a live audience and then lock yourself in a room and watch your handling. Repeat until you have your own national TV debut.

I perform this effect in all of my shows and it has never and I mean never failed to receive a great response. This is one of my most requested magic effects that I perform along with a simple $ 1.50 prop that is the most remembered and requested. (Tide-In-The-Middle) which is a comedy gag.

Okay Rodney - You have to tell us - how do you use the tide in the middle with the vanishing bandana. PM me if you must. I just watched a video of tide in the middle online.
Walt - a couple of things you might not be getting... 1 - I don't use the set CD. I made my own audio recording. 2 - I have never had anyone come up to me and say they have seen this before. I know it has been around since vaudville, but I really believe that live magic shows are a very uncommon experience for 99% of people. The odds of them having seen this effect are slight. 3 - As others have said. This thing kills. Parents belly laugh and tell me how much they enjoyed that after the show. Little children (pre-K) come up to me to let me know that the CD said bandana and not bannanna - very cute. It is awesome. Walt - I think it would be good for you to lower yourself, just for a day, and do it! |
