Even if I'm going for groceries, I'll still take a cup along. Sometimes looks can be deceiving.
However, if you purchase an orange or an apple that's too big, you can always eat your act. It's almost as good as being a dove worker!

I took my cups into a store yesterday to check on something. When I got to the register, the cashier asked me if I was also buying the cups (the store carried many different types of items and the cups could have been one of their products for all she knew).
I told the cashier that they were mine and I used them for magic. She rang up my purchase and then asked me if I would show her a trick. I took one of the quarters from my change and did a simple retention vanish and then reproduced it. She was amazed. After such an awe-inspiring successful performance, I'm thinking I'll be spending more time in the "Show Me The Money" room of the Café. Moral of the story: If you tell someone you're a magician, be prepared to perform! Terry

If you have a wholesale party items distributor in town, you might find some rubber rocks that work really nicely.

I find hacky sacks are good. They come in various designs and colors and are quite. Also check Oriental Trading for inexpensive stuff to load and give away. They have small toys, yo-yo's,(I just found windup up walking teeth for a seniors load $10.99 per dozen) Frog popups 3.49 a doz. I've been able to local a gross of stuff for less than $10.

How about 144 bouncing neon balls for $9.99? Or 38 lumpy toads for $6.99? and check out the key chains!
just a thought mind you. I purchased from them quite a bit when I was putting on Cubscout camps on a budget. What do you call someone who pays to work? A volunteer. |

Some of these dimensions, as I mentioned above, are not correct. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.
You may end up with a lot more load balls, etc., than you planned to.

Thanks for clarifying that.
My brother is a nut, but he won't fit into the chop cup.

I have a pet theory on loads that I'd like to float here--it's inspired by Mike Caveny's final load in his plunger routine, an "asprin" tablet the size of a hockey puck.
I'm thinking, a good load is a larger version of something that's normally really small, like, well, an asprin tablet. I'm hoping the audience will a) think "Wow, that's a really big pill, insect, etc" and b) tell their friends "last night I saw a magician, and he pulled the biggest (whatever it is) I've ever seen out of a little cup." In other words, when your load space is limited, this might punch up the surprise factor. So what do you guys think? Yes? No? Don't care?

I think anything that is surprising and incongruous makes a great final load. A large eyeball is surprising and funny. A real eyeball is gross.

Bill, I think that's partly my point. I suspect that a large eyeball will play "bigger" than a small lime. (since the audience has likely seen larger limes)
So agreed on incongruity, but just as not all incongruity is funny, perhaps there is a certain type of incongruity that is ideal for this purpose.

When I do the strolling bit in the hospital, I use the smiley face balls for the final loads, because they are very large, compared to the cup, and they look funny. It makes the children and their parents laugh. And that's one reason I'm there.
At the Renaissance Festival, it's a different situation, a different audience, and a different mindset. That's where I do the billiard balls. It fits the situation. It's almost instinctive.

I am definitely going with the smileys, got a mess of 35mm sized on the way. Got another little Don issue, The release of the ball requires a very hard slam, is there a way to weaken the ball? or is there a source for weaker 3/4" balls?

Though this thread is about done, I thought I'd make a final post on what I have learned about my journey with the Little Don. Firstly, I simply love it and ordered another one in Brass. I've worked an adaptation of John Mendoza's routine, applying as close as possible his philosophy to the chop cup as presented in His My Best Series. My goal was to produce a give away for my patients at the end of my walk around 3 trick bedside show, closing with the chop routine.
The final word on the Smiley Balls as my final loads: I produce the 35mm smiley first, then produce the largest possible Smiley measuring 45mm ( a hair larger than a golf ball, but oh so quiet). Since Smileys need a lot more room to bounce around, and no longer fit in the cup..better to go home with the child. I am using the working balls that came with my old Uday cup, as the release has felt the best for me so far. I would love to find a smaller ball that worked as well, but I am very pleased with the final outcome of this whole adventure. My sincerest thanks to everyone for the advice, and the chance to work out my learning curve with the magi collective minds here. Thanks also to Bill Palmer for his help on this, and other Cup issues I have experienced. Tomorrow my Little Don routine goes live at the hospital, and after months of preparation, I am ready to have some real fun now. Click here to view attached image.

Since we are talking about secret things here, i.e. how these cups work, I'll post the solution to the banquet room.
