I think Jaz and others have it right. We have some incredibly talented coin people here, amateur, semi pro, an pro. If "rated" means they have a lot of DVDs for sale, big on the lecture circuit, books, etc. Well then the majority of the coin guys here are underrated.
I've learned a lot from just about everybody on the coin forums, even after doing coins for over 40 years. Trying to rate any of them would be an injustice.

The entire La Famiglia coin group is just incredible. The kindest, most helpful group of coin men it has been my privilege and honor to know.
Marion is wonderful for his advice and clever thinking! Tim designs superb routines and has wonderful patter! And the Godfather is amazing for his willingness to help, and his limitless (as far as know) reservoir of knowledge concerning coin magic, as well as his countless nuances! These guys are the best if you ask me. Josh |

Why in the world would anyone want to be known as or called a "coin", "card", "dove", etc magician? To me that says you only do one thing, and that you are about to bore me to death with it! If you do more than one or two (3 TOPS!!!) of one thing, ie coins, then all you are doing is masturbating and no body should have to be witness to that. I mean, seriously, don't you do anything else? It also tells me you are NOT a magician but just someone who likes and does that certain trick(s).
Call yourself MAGICIAN and be proud of that. A magician should be able to do a variety of effects and not just one group. Overrated, underrated…who cares! |

I think I'm like the rest of the folks on the coin threads, my interests are close-up magic period (coins, cards, elastics, etc). But I do prefer coin magic. It doesn't mean that's ALL I perform but hey..I lean towards it so yeah I'm a coin guy. But make no mistake, I am a magician regardless of my preference.
No harm in having a favorite... |

But you've got guys in this industry who have made a living on doing one specific genre of magic for LAYMEN and are quite successful and aren't boring at all. My favorite example of this kind of performer would be 2 time Magic Castle Close-Up Magician of the Year, Jon Armstrong. He's made his living doing nothing but comedy magic with cards and has done an exceptional job with it. The problem that I have, and I think that this may be where you were trying to take your comment Justin, is all the magicians who are entirely too focused on the moves, and not focused enough on the connection with people. They use spectators to satisfy their own needs rather than to their gifts to fulfill the desires of others. I've got a big problem with that.....

I agree. To be a magician is a good thing and to have favorite medium is cool too. It's just being labeled that would wack me out. "Oh check out Billy, he's a kids magician" or something like that...
I'd rather be known as s crappy magician than a card magician. Ya see, cards peg you into a hole. Instead it can be like this, "Oh here's Justin, the crappy magician". That I like because they don't know what type of crap you're going to do. If I was known as a coin magician (even an underrated one)and someone hates coin tricks, as soon as they hear you're a "coin" magician, they'll leave. "Coins!? ah, let's go, I'm tired of seeing coin tricks" know what I'm sayin? |

know what I'm sayin? Hmmm.. you'd rather be a crappy all-round magician than an excellent card or coin or comedy guy. I think that speaks more to your own limitations than anything else. Good luck with that. |

I think Justin was just trying to say he'd rather not limit himself to only one type of magic when working for laypeople, which I agree with. I'm not sure why he'd rather be a "crappy magician" than a "card magician" though, or at least I'm not sure why he stated it quite that way. As the old saying goes, "Jack of all trades, master of none."

I have been known as a coin guy, but I prefer an audience guy.
Connection with coins and other props allow me to connect with my audiences. Where does the coin end and the magician begin? Humor, now and zen is not always easy to understand, in the written form. (but it can make (the writer and sometimes reader) smile and feel better.

I just want to try to be a little clear(er), I hope/don't think I'm a crappy magician but that's up to the poor people who have to endure my performance to decide. I wouldn't mind being known as a crappy magician if that's what peoples’ expectation is. That way all I can do is surprise them, "hey, you weren't that bad". If their expectation is that you are going to be great, then all you can do is let them down, "Hey, he wasn't that great". I never claimed to be the best; I certainly hope I'm not the worst. I just am happy to be somewhere lost in the middle of mediocrity. And, I’m happy to be here…stuck in the middle with you. So I guess what I’m sayin is you can call me anything, just don’t call me Sue. hey now! holla! |
