Of course there are copies around. But since it wasn't published, I doubt that they're easily attainable. Especially just by asking in a open forum.
Peo, one of my prized items in my collection is issue #1 of Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., autographed by the man himself. That and a photo of Steranko watching Lennart Green do a card trick, signed by both. |

I'm also a huge fan of Steranko.
too bad he quit magic, the guy was a living machine... he published his book on cards at 21(!). In this link you can find "some" information on the book. It's a book on estimation. Apparently, from what I can understand, Bruce Cervon had a copy of the book, and it was put in an auction (and somebody bought it). https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/694......ublished And dear pepka, maybe you can put a scan of the photo online so other can see it as well? thanks |

News...
PRESS RELEASE After instantaneously skyrocketing to fame decades ago, Steranko shocked the magic world by disappearing with equal abruptness -- creating a mystery insiders have analyzed ever since. This month, Magic's Mystery Man has returned with a vengeance—a startling, surreal GENII cover (visualizing his old friend Martin Gardner) and announcing his return to the field in collaboration with Illusion.Works on a series of magic-based products. The first release is a Special Edition of STERANKO ON CARDS, originally published in 1960 (by the Ireland Magic Company, now Magic Inc.), which introduced his innovative and highly-influential card technique to the world. The STERANKO ON CARDS Special Edition is limited to 100 hardcover books, each signed and numbered by the writer-artist, with an elegant, foil-stamped SLIPCASE also designed by him. Also included with the book is a unique, numbered CARD CLIP and a METAL BOOKMARK of matching design. The Special Edition will be available at the Illusion.Works website, www.Illusion.Works in the first quarter of 2016. Pricing and release date will be announced January 15. Steranko is one of the most controversial figures in pop culture, with a dozen successful careers to his credit: author, illustrator, editor, publisher, designer, musician, escape artist, historian, and magician. He is cited as one of the prime architects of Marvel Comics and the creator of the First Modern Graphic Novel (1975), RED TIDE. As the editor-publisher of the international newsstand entertainment magazine PREVUE, he conducted hundreds of superstar interviews and penned more than three million words. As a filmmaker, he collaborated with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas—for whom he created the look of Indiana Jones—and Francis Ford Coppola on some of their most popular films. He has shown his work at more than 300 exhibitions worldwide, including at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC and the Louvre in Paris. He recently shook up Twitter with his innovative TNT technique; and is currently prepping AN EVENING WITH STERANKO for live theatrical venues across the country. Illusion.Works is a collaboration between legendary magic prop maker Joe Porper and Writer/Magician Scott Jenkins.

A tad late to this discussion, but I'll share the following for whatever it's worth to the membership.
I had a chance to meet and talk with Jim Steranko at the East Coast Comic Con (11-12 April 2015) in the Meadowlands, NJ. (Actually, I had met him before, at the Philadelphia Creation Con in 1977, where he kindly autographed my copy of "Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD" #1, but I didn't discuss or even know at the time that he was a noted card magician.) Knowing he'd be at this April 2015 convention, I'd brought along my copy of "Steranko on Cards" and asked if he would sign it. He did, but also told me that what I had was not a first edition --- the only one for which Jay Marshall paid him any royalties. Steranko said he never authorized further editions of that book. (Ouch!) He didn't mention anything about the second manuscript, and I didn't ask him about it. I did, however, bring a deck of cards and asked if he would demonstrate his Lateral Palm, but he demurred. Otherwise, he was generous with his time, spoke of some upcoming projects, and seemed to be having a grand time. For those interested, Steranko did the artwork (cover and interior) for Milt Kort's treatise, "Kort is Now in Session" (1962). Anyone familiar with Steranko's artwork will recognize it immediately. Also, Steranko is good friends with Simon Aronson, and one of the latter's books --- either "Art Deco" or "Try the Impossible", if I recall --- has, near the front, a photo of himself with Steranko and Lennart Green. Finally, while much mention has been made of Steranko's work on the "Nick Fury" comics --- a character that Steranko did NOT create, by the way --- Steranko's influence also appears elsewhere in the comic book universe. Jack Kirby, co-creator of Captain America (in 1941, with Joe Simon), based his "Mister Miracle" character on Jim Steranko's early career as an escape artist. |
