Curious to know how many here theme their magic shows for holiday performances.
As an example, if you were booked to entertain at a show during a 4th of July celebration, would you theme it toward this holiday, or toss in just one patriotic magic number? Same thing with Easter, Halloween & Christmas. If you do theme your shows, have you noticed a significant increase in bookings by doing so? Thanks, Gerry |

Yeah, I theme it a little for chrimbo and helloween. Usually a couple of tricks for christmas but I tend to do more for hallowe'en.
Not a great deal but sure it's appreciated. Incidentally, an American once asked me if we had the fourth of July over here. I said "No, we go straight from the 3rd to the 5th" They said "Really?" True story George |

Yes I theme as well and have effects I use for differnt holidays and even seasons as well. it helps me to customize the shows and offer more shows for different markets as well. there are also effects that customize easily that I do a lot. For example Drawing board is one where I change the drawings all the time pending what holiday it is. Lots of ideas and opportunities to be creative there.

My Christmas show is very themed. And I think the customers really appreciate it.
I don't do as much theming for other shows. I guess I could do a little for Easter or Halloween, but I'm not too interested in doing a Halloween themed show (personal reasons). Although on July 1st, I did a Canada Day Show, and so I performed my Mismade Canadian Flag as a part of that. Whenever I've done Canada Day shows in the past, I've included it then, too. - Donald

I do 2 or 3 effects with the theme, but I don't do the entire show with a theme!
Thanks, Hansel!

I'm with you Hansel. I also usually put in only 2 or 3 tricks or illusions, that tie in with a nearby Holiday.

Thanks guys. It's just interesting to hear what others do. Although I have on occasion tossed in a holiday themed trick, I've never done an entire show whereby all the magical effects were tied into any particular holiday.

Gerry,
I would certainly recommend taking advantage of holiday themes. There is nothing better than a good repeat customer. Changing themes with the season solves many of their problems and yours. The more you go back, the harder you are to replace. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

My Christmas magic show is completely themed for that one month of the year.
Everything including the custom red, white and green painted trunk with a very portable folding fireplace and mantle witch holds my custom trunk, ALL the magic effects, balloon shtick, jokes, gags and even my costume which is completely themed around Jack Frost. My regular children's performance name is Zany Zack for the other 11 months out of the year but for Christmas I am "Zack Frost" and promote my 40 minute X-Mas holliday show called Zack Frosts Spirit of Christmas Magic Show. Christmas is definitely the most busiest month out of the year for most children's performers and I learned many years ago that putting together a 100% Christmas themed show from top to bottom with all the trimmings always pays off big, big, big for the month of December. That show is really the only true customized themed show I have other than 2 school assembly show programs that I also perform. It makes a lot of sense to put together a fully customized Christmas show. It will definitley set you back quite a bit of money when you first put it together but you will be so glad you made the initial investment.

I not only do completely different shows for every major holiday, I even have different wardrobe/costumes and backdrop panels. It took a lot of work to create this many different shows, but it has definitely been worth it.

I use theme shows for libraries and schools and holidays.
The main holidays I do shows for are Halloween and Christmas. Other than the summer months, Christmas is my busiest season of the year, and it actually starts in early November. Last year I didn't even start marketing until the beginning of September, and I was completely booked solid. I'll be booked solid again this year as well. If you don't have a themed Christmas show, it's very easy to do, doesn't cost a lot for extra props and items (garlands, etc.), and pays a lot more than a regular show. Because it's one of the busiest times of the year, companies will pay a premium fee to hire you. So if you don't have a Christmas show prepared, get started now, and have the best Christmas you've had in a long time! Brian |

I perform themed shows for libraries, Halloween and Christmas. I also do several educational themed shows. the versatility keeps me coming back to previous clients for different occasions. It has been pretty simple to do. A lot of the effects I do can be changed and tweeked for a specific theme. You owe to yourself to have some themed shows. It has helped me alot!

I only theme for one holiday - Christmas. The rest of the year, my show is pretty standard.

Yes, I get asked enough for Christmas shows that I've made one up. It's worth it because it sells and it's fun. http://www.abbylondon.com/christmasmagicshow.htm

Thanks Jim,
I love your saw too! I bet you do magic with a cutting edge...O.k. I know that was corny. I couldn't help myself. Bottom line is, definitely try to theme at least one show for any of the holidays be it, Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc. and you will have something extra special you can market and make a lot of money at. It has been working for me for over 15 years and is worth the effort.
