Other than a few editorials in Magic Magazine and the FCM magazine, I have heard little regarding the "stunt" that Penn & Teller threw in the faces of those attending a roast for The Amazing Jonathon.
At first I thought it a good thing that little was mentioned of it. Second thoughts made me wonder just what the stunt was and if the duo had felt any repercussions. It does seem that like so many other areas of life, magic performers have embraced debasing elements and called it entertainment. Perhaps there has been discussion of this issue elsewhere on this board...if so, I missed it. Andrew |

There has been a great deal of discussion on this topic on this board. Unfortunately it has always digressed into posturing and name calling so the threads end up deleted.
This one too will eventually find its way into the "bit bucket". This topic has become a patch of beaten dirt where once a dead horse was found,

Payne,
Thanks for responding. I suppose this has all been swept under the carpet and if the discussion can't be carried on with a degree of respect, then I suppose it should stay there. I was currious as to what had happened, but I certainly don't wish to revisit an issue that has already been hacked to death. Andrew |

The letters in the Shoot Ogawa MAGIC Magazine were very well written and disscuss the topic well. I hope AJ, Penn, and Teller have an open mind while reading those letters. They can learn something.

There are far better letters on the subject in this month's MAGIC editorials. The best response to this event, however; can be found on the Genii Forum. It was Penned by none other than Whit Haydn. It is by far the most rational evaluation of this stunt that I have encountered, and can be found Here!

There seems to be a double-standard operating here:
Mocking Jesus Christ is supposed to be taken as a performance art/statement, and we are all urged to grin and shrug it off with a post-modernist, sophisticated "yeah, so what?" attitude, even by those who admit it was in extremely poor taste, but I wonder how many would take the same "sophisticated" attitude if Penn and Teller did a stunt such as Martin Luther King Jr. Bullet Catch or Anne Frank Cremation Illusion (Penn, dressed up as Dr. Josef Mengele, keeps shouting out: "It's a gas!") or how about Prophet Mohammed To Pig (based on Lady to Lion illusion) Funny stuff, eh? (NOT) Like Mr. Haydn, I continue to admire Penn and Teller's skill as performers, but their cruelty and disrespect to people who don't hold to their atheist beliefs is very distasteful. We already have way too much cruelty and mockery of people who believe "differently" than we do in this world, so why add to it? |

Dai, I couldn't agree more with you. You bring up some great points, thank you for expressing them.

There are parallel type threads going on in the "It isn't magic but..." section concerning what is "appropriate" etc. I tend to be more laid back on a lot of sensitive issues, as long as the intent to offend is not there. But on the other hand there are some issues that I think should be held with a bit more respect.
I am not a proponent of enforced thought policing, political correctness or censorship, however, those that have no morals or no sense of anything being held "sacred" are free to mock or poke fun at whatever they wish. If they "offend" enough people maybe eventually they won't have an audience at all. I liked the alternate examples above given by Dai, they make an excellent point. GlenD

Mmmmm...seems to me I read a scripture somewhere where evil will be called good and good, evil.
I really shudder to think we live in an age where members of our cultured and celebrated elite, blaspheme the name of God and call it "Art". I read a quote that stated a society's art is a reflection of that society. If this is so, then I pray for the deliverance and the soul of our society. |

We ought to have been praying for our nation long before Penn and Teller's stunt.
But as long as we are in this period of grace, it is never too late. GlenD

I think that what most are missing here is this is exactly what P&T wanted. The controvery, the media attention, to be the talk of the town again... just let it go, and let it die.

This is old news. Months old. I am amazed this topic still serves to agitate and provoke rightous anger in some. The show skit was a juvenile pun illustrated with actors.
Perhaps some discussion of the Penn remark to the younger magicians at the convention is in order. While this too is old news, the question of how beliefs are founded and justified in the modern world is legitimate.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

But the topic of how beliefs are founded and justified would not be ON TOPIC in any (except maybe the It's not magic) forum here.
