I can't remember the exact quote or who it came from (other than that it was from someone we probably all know), but the gist of it was, "A good artist creates, a great artist steals." Even Picasso ripped his style from African artists. Some of Van Gogh's best work was done because of what was doing well in France at the time.
Neither of them took directly. They saw what they liked, or what others liked, and applied it to what they wanted to do. If Derren is doing the same, good for him. I do it myself, to be completely upfront. It's the whole basis of making yourself better at something. Study the greats, apply what you can to yourself while making it your own. It's exactly what school teaches you to do, if you get down to it. Any sort of school of the art exemplifies this more than others, or so I think. I have no idea if he is modeling Bandler. I've never seen one second of anything by him. All I'm trying to say is that it would make sense. One quick aside, from what I've heard, Nyman didn't want the spotlight so that he could concentrate fully on his acting career. Being known as a magician/mentalist/psychological performer/poodle breeder would halt that, and so he offered the opportunity he was given to his friend Derren. I don't really understand why this is being talked over so much. An artist was influenced by someone. Say what? /paul.f |

Its been talked over so much because some seem to "have a problem with it".

Whatever Derren has or hasn't done, it has made him extremely successful and I for one respect that more than anything. I think if people were more honest with themselves, they would have to admit without Derren a good percentage of people on these boards would be still doing sponge balls.

But I still do sponge balls. I must be without Derren.

I still do sponge balls. Those little babies are like real magic, not like this mind rubbish that everyone else is doing.
Derren Brown is brilliant. Anyone that disagrees must have some crazy warped sense of the world. How can you argue with the Olivier Award, countless TV shows, sell out theatre tours, books, DVDs. And some people STILL say it is down to luck. Cupid stunts. |

Ha. I see what you did there. You basically took my joke and repeated it. It is just like the discussion that is going on about progression of art. Only you didn't improve on it.

Not my intent to improve it, just my idea about Berren Drown possibly, or not

Why do you have this compulsion to constantly defend and expose your obvious love for the man? Especially when there is no defending required. No one is attacking him on this thread. Perhaps you should start a "sign in if you love Derren" thread? I think the level of Derren worship on here is giving the worshipers a warped sense of the world. Seems they believe everyone should share their opinion likes and dislikes. To me that's warped and a bit obsessive. Im curious is your bedroom plastered with posters of old Derren? |

This whole place is filled with comments about how lucky and mediocre he is. The evidence states otherwise. I was just pointing it out in a friendly manner.
My room has posters of the new Derren too. At least my obsession doesn't involve posters of him mutilated and torn. LACES OUT DERREN! |
