Okito boxes..............I suspect that boxes of brass must outnumber boxes of copper on the order of 99 to 1. In fact, I can't recall ever seeing an Okito box made of copper. What's the reason for this? Is it simply cheaper to use brass? Is brass easier to work with for this sort of thing? Is it perhaps that copper provides little colour contrast if you're using English pennies as part of your routine?

I was thinking about that all week as a matter of fact. I thought I was the only one who wonder about this thing. The only conclusion I can make is that copper is a softer metal. Then again I'm no expert....just an educated guess. Anyway, I was actually having one made. I will know how it goes tomorrow when I visit the shop.

I'm not a metallurgist so I can't comment on the reasons why or why not but now that I think of it, a copper box would look cool in my small but growing collection! Send me a pic when it's done Rannie or better yet show us ALL one of your famous routines with it!

Actually, there have been Okito boxes made of copper.
There are two processes used in making Okito boxes. One is spinning, which is used often in making cups. The other is machining, which is not used as often in making cups, but is sometimes used. The difference is that normally, with spun boxes, the wall-floor junction is curved on the outside. Some of the new boxes, such as the ones with the post coins, require a sharper corner than that. CNC machining or turret lathe machining provides this kind of corner. However, brass and stainless steel are much easier to machine than copper. Copper is rather soft and has a tendency to spall at high speeds. Brass is much more forgiving.

Brass and stainless (or chromed) also look much nicer.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

The patina on copper looks a lot more attractive than the patina on brass........IMHO. When polished, however, brass beats copper.........again IMHO.

Morrissey Magic Ltd. in Canada makes (made?) a relatively inexpensive copper Okito Coin Box with a pin hole in the top and bottom for the Mohammed Bey-type routines.

Those are spun, not CNC machined. They are also not as convenient for certain routines.

Both weight and balance are crucial to most good Okito Coin Boxes and uses.
Thus a machined box is far preferable to a spun one I think. Copper can pick-up an uneven patina and sometimes holds an odor (think pennies). So along with Bill’s info, these are my votes on why copper would not be ideal. Magically, Walt |
