Hello,
Food, gas, and medical supplies are at record highs.... Some might view it as a bad sign but it can be good for us. How, why and what does this mean? It is the time to market to these companies for holiday parties. Why you may ask? They are making money! When you make money time to SPEND it.... Companies such as clothing, most car manuf, airlines, transporting -shipping, banks and .com companies are the ones you should avoid marketing to as a rule of thumb. They are having issues as we know it. These are the types of companies I can think of for now... Please add to this list. FOOD - grocery stores, distributors, wine, beer, suppliers and manufactures - (stay away from restaurant and coffee they are in trouble) MEDICAL- Suppliers, High End Dr.'s, medical billing, manufactures and distributors (hospt. are in a bit of trouble so go for the high end Dr. practices) ELECTRONICS - a bit tricky, but go for companies like - Apple/mac and their suppliers/ manufactures IE cases, components, acceroies, - At&T wireless PET industry - suppliers, stores, manufactures (this business is booming) THE GREEN COMPANIES - devolpers - suppliers and the new green friendly business OIL - Suppliers, corporate side of the gas -IE SHEL, BP, port authorities Also, Some should consider taking a step back and market themselves back into the schools and college market (if you have experience) Be a more flexable in fees since the magicians that are on the low end are even LOWER today than the last week. Magicians with the right acts market to ASIA, they are doing well. Stay away from hotels, travel, airlines, Vegas companies.... they are feeling the pain. Again these are a rule of thumb exceptions always. Any others????

Excellent thinking Curtis.
This kind of creative positive thinking is what is needed amongst politicians too. Perhaps you should also consider running for office? A very timely and well thought out post. Thank you and continued success. GH

So, how many of you got gigs working the lines early morning at the iPhone launches?
One thing we need is to become more proactive and look for opportunities to exploit. Good list Curtis. |

All the prices are going up like you said. That is partial why a lot of entertainers prices are going down. The other reason is because of the economy.

Great stuff. Another thing to remember is to also remember that because of gas prices, people are tending to not take as many trips. In many cases I am referring to summer camps, day cares and schools and the like. Many are not taking the kids on the buses to events and to trips cause of the cost. With this in mind, you can target using this as a marketing idea. Target it as a solution to the problem that you can create a fun trip for them by bringing that to their location thus saving them money but also giving the children something fun as well.

WRONG TIME TO LOWER OUR PRICES!!!
Anything of value is going up in price - if your program isn't of value then it is understandable that your prices are going down. Instead of lowering your standard fee - why don't we as a rule add perseved value to our programs to create a win win situation?! There are too many that depending on performing as a living to compete with want to be's lowering the general market value by discounting there time filling form of entertainment. |

Specifically I am referring to the corporate market here. The "cheapos" are plentiful and will underbid you every time so a great sales pitch is a must.

The other thing to consider is those "full-time" folks that are "bottom feeders" as far as fees go. In a tightening market/economy, these are the first casualties. They either quite the biz and get a full-time job because they can no longer live on the fees they are asking, or are quoting fees so low that they do not want to bother going out for them (this would apply to the weekend warriors). Tightening supply results in higher prices for those that have a solid product and have being running as a business. Without the low end/low balling competition not only will you get your prices, but through demand your prices can, and will, start to move upwards.

Nice take there Blair. There are three types of performers. Gifted talent, gifted marketers, and gifted both. I have to learn to say no and also know when I got a price shopper on the phone. I would like to say I have some talent but I have a lot to learn about sales. I am onto all the salesmen who call me and want me to pay for higher rankings on google etc. I see right through their pitch. Perhaps that is why I quit offering deluxe verses basic shows.
Personally I prefer email bids which I do average more then phone calls. I would say 90 percent of my phone calls are price shoppers. I still receive kids show callers which most times I pass on but lately I have been offering strolling and family type performances. I have yet to book one but one day I may.
