First and foremost, I want to thank Nathan Kranzo for putting out "4 Coins for Jimmy". Thanks to his routine and technique I was able to come up with Shoalin. Also, as for the second penetration, many thanks to Eric Jones. There were a few moves here that I remember learning from Eric. So, what I'm doing here is, I want to see what's new. See what's been used before, and of course, to get a good critique from the Café members. I'm hoping to see a lot posting. Thanks to all in advance.

I definately dug it. It looks like it could be a little more fluent, but that's just a matter of practicing it as a whole. The final vanish looked sort of fishy but the fact that it ended looking so clean makes up for it. Well not completely, but if a layman sees both hands like that then chances are that they won't care that your movements were a tad fishy. Overall I really liked it.

Nice TJ, I liked it mostly. Even saw some aspects of my Blow Change DeLuxe in some of the moves. Good job! -Mb

Overall I liked it. I agree with Connor's comments though, could be more fluid.
What struck me was you look either a little bored or a little too serious. You're almost expressionless and with a routine with no speaking that can be a problem. I'm not saying you should over-act or ham it up but inject some energy into the routine. |

You flash a little bit, and you can be more expressive. come on! your finger penetrates a coin, its a strange thing!
blesses bye!

TJ,
I'd like to offer a couple of suggestions if I may. The first penetration is really very similar to Joel Given's version with the exception of using a regular coin instead of the shell, or am I mistaken? It looks great, and I'm glad you're able to use Nate's excellent JW Grip idea and give it a different application. Not really the Blow Change, or my spellbound change at all... As far as my first penetration of Tai Chi Penetration is concerned, I like your take of creating the illusion of the coin penetrating the finger rather than the finger penetrating the coin. Very creative gesture on your part, if you ask me. However, I do think that you should really work on the fluidity. What I'm seeing in the video are each individual step executed individually rather than all of them happening at once, if you get my meaning. PM me if that's not clear enough man... Unless you fooled me badly, looks like you used the frame rate to do what Bobo describes as "taking advantage of a fumble", to ditch the Finger Gimlet....lol The last sequence seemed a bit weird to me as well. I wasn't sure if you were trying to make the coin melt away, penetrate the coin through the palm of the hand or what, though I thought you did Dr. Rubinstein's ROPS move very well. That last vanish could have been a bit clearer than it was. Too much movement. The other thing that I'd wanted to comment on(and I'm sorry if it seems like I'm picking the routine apart in this post) but exposing the gimmick isn't cool at all without presentation that justifies it. The bust-out version is self explanitory, but using the gimlet really proves you're using two coins and just hiding the other. When doing the Karate Coin, you already have the Too-Perfect Theory working against you, so you have to be super careful to convince your spectators that you're using only one coin. I think showing the coin OFF THE FINGER the way you are, really proves without a shadow of a doubt, that you're using two coins.

Ack.
Dude, read Eric's post from the bottom up. The last thing's the most improtant. You've learned some great techniques for creating a stunning illusion, and you do them well (at least at this frame rate) but you spoil it all by exposing the gaff. You spoil it for yourself, your audience, and the rest of us who use this secret properly. Changing a coin is one effect. Restoring a "torn" or "broken" coin is another. The magical penetration of a coin is yet another. You haven't presented any good reason to jam these effects together, and so end up with less than nothing. Clever combination of moves, but I don't think you've considered the effect. I wish you would.

To all, thank you for all your input. There were a lot of great tips. And thanks Eric for laying out in great detail. Everything that has been mention will be taken into consideration and worked on. In all honesty, this was really a concept video. I realize that there were going to be somethings that was going to need work. So, its back to the drawing board I go. Again, thanks everyone for tossing in their pennies. Also, thanks Curtis for taking time to watch and comment on the video. I will definately be working hard fine tunning this.

From someone who has long neglected his coin work in favour of cards, and who is only now again beginning to put the work back into coins (I know that's confusing), I just wanna say that video was brilliant and an inspiration.
Well done bro, keep up the good work. |

Best part of the routine was the penetration of the coin onto the finger but I agree that you can't use a half with a hole. However it might look great with a chinese coin with a hole in it! Eric mentions the ROPS move. You didn't use it but it would be a better move for you at that point. The third finger on the coin makes the move more obvious. Listen to the other comments here all good. Magic is a work in progress as we strive to always make something better. Keep working, you are on a good path.
