I have a manipulation act together but I always loved the mouth coil and just had to throw it into the act. I do not want to produce the mouth coil from my hand. I want it in my mouth and be able to cover a stage with it. The way jeff McBride does it. I would love to stuff tissue paper in my mouth but that would just seem silly in a manipulation act. Also if I feel that it would break the wall of this great manipulator going down into the audience and searching for someone. So I was looking for a way to put that mouth coil into there with some cover. The only one I can think of is produce some cotton candy ...eat some with the mouth coil. Can anyone suggest a good way of doing so?
Keep in mind this is for a magic competition so I can't just randomly put it in my mouth. |

There's got to be an easier way to load it. What else are you doing in the routine?

I can but the only problem is that this is a magic competition. If it wasn't you can load it and no one would care. I assume the judges wouldn't like that

Palm the coil, reach up to scratch your head and as your hand passes your mouth, pop it in.
I use to pretend to push a ball thru the top of my head and produce it from my mouth and used this method. Another idea is to palm it and when you reach up to extract it, pop it in your mouth. |

Go with the cotton candy.

How about doing the balls from mouth routine with the finale being the mouth coil? Instead of using sponge balls you can use different colored balls appearing from your mouth and of course the final one being the mouth coil (David Cressey's multi-colored mouth coil would be good to complement the colored balls).

There are a lot of people who HATE mouth coils. If your judges are among them, then you have just shot yourself in the foot.
Some people actually have to restrain themselves to keep from barfing when they see people pull mouth coils out of their mouths.

Cena: Yes I did, It was hard the first few times, but I'm doing birthday parties now because its more money.
Thanks for all your ideas. But bill you have me scared now. Why do judges hate mouth coil? Is it because it is to easy of a effect? I never heard of this before but some of my judges will be professional magicians, tv producers, and audience. So to the laymen it is one of the greatest effects. I done this before at other events but I just did McBride routine. but this time I can't like I explained on the first post. I would love to hear why mouth coil would make someone vomit? Everytime I did this I get amazement and never disgust |

I'll be willing to bet you that there are people in your audiences whose gorge begins to rise when they see you pull that stuff out of your mouth. There are people who don't like sword swallowers for the same reason.
Remember, the judges aren't laymen. Don't try to do an act you would do for laymen for the judges. And for pete's sake, don't do anyone else's act, either.

I just find that in this instance we must be very careful of what we put into an act and not do it because we in essence "fall in love with ourselves". What I mean is that I see far too many magicians place something into an act simply because they love it but it has no reason or purpose to even be in the act in the first place. It is ok to like something and to enjoy something. Afterall we are magicians and we love that sort of thing. But we must realize that what we do is not for us really. It is for the audiences we perform for. If the item or segment we place in the act does not help the act or the entertainment value of it, then it must not go in. No matter how much you like an effect, you must be open and honest with yourself as to what should be included and what should not. Kyle

From all my shows the audience loved the mouth coil. So that's why I want it in my act. I found my own method of putting it in my act now and everything flows nicely. The only thing that is bugging me is that bill brought up that people hate to see this. I'm not barfing it out but rather going from one side of the stage to the other like McBride does and he has gotten really good reactions to this.
