Hey gang, at Wal-Mart you can find a "Wood Clothes Hamper" for about 13 bucks. The base is the "X" type folding base, stands 33 inches high. It is light weight and very sturdy.
Now for the table top??? After wracking my brain, I got the idea to get one of their "black boards", 17"x24" I think, or the larger size if you need more surface. Pad the top with your padding of choice and cover with your surface of choice. Velveteen for me, using spary adhesive. The black boards have a "raised molding" (the frame) that will keep balls, ect. from rolling off. Just precisely cut your surface material to fit with in the frame area, and voila!— an inexpensive, easy to make table!!! You can carry the table top in the canvas bag that comes with it...nothing wasted!! Hope this helps someone!! |

redstreak,
I know the feeling! Got the idea of the base from another thread on here I couldn't relocate. I didn't think my Wal-Mart carried it (couldn't find it) until I finally asked and found it in the area not far from where they sell "coathangers". The idea for the table top was staring me in the face when it hit me...lol... I will probably paint the base black. Let me know how yours turns out, OK?? |

Yeah, that's a great idea. Very cost efficient. I'm going to get over there pronto. So it's like a folding diner table? With a carrying bag? That's awesome!

Great idea, but I couldn't find the hamper at Wal-Mart. I'll try another Wal-Mart, maybe I'll have better luck.

inidyls,
Yes, check around, not all Wal-Marts are equal! I also saw the same type of hamper at "Linen and Things", a chain that sells house hold goods etc. The base looks like a large oversized "TV tray/folding table". Oh another thing...if the chalkboard/table top fits slightly unevenly due to its frame, just glue some "wood slats" that are 1/4 inch thick in each corner of the underside. These I also found at Wal-Mart in the arts and crafts section. I would love hearing how everyone is progressing on this project. |

Thanks for the idea MDSPARK. This sure solves a problem for a lot of us here at the old Café. I am going out to get mine tonight.

Man, Wal-Mart can beat out Hank Lee's and Tannen's any time. I've been able to make a flying carpet illusion and my own lota bowl. I've been able to find linking rings I was able to make, and I've found lovely sets of cups for cups and balls. Thinks of the wonderful cheap magic— *tear*.
Hey I'm a magician, i've never told a lie.....oops:o/

Just used my table in its first show...performed great. Had several comments from laypersons about it. I think I will afix some velcro where the top makes contact with the base to alleviate the tendency for it to "slide".
BTW, I painted mine your basic black with gold trim. The base is black with a gold strip painted in front and center of each part of the "X"— if that makes sense. Hard to explain on here. |

And think of the size of that servante!
Add some fringe along the tray edges, make the cutout for the well, and voila! One hot ticket! Great find and share!

I was looking at our local Big R and found a threaded pipe and two flange. Using wood screws I scewed each flange into a piece of plywood which I painted black and painted the pipe chrome and voila, instant table for around 10 bucks. It looks good too.
I could make dozens of these for the price of one pro-line rollon table. |

Anyone actually made one of these other than me? I would like to hear your results and how it turned out.

I have not made a base but I did make a table top out of an old picture frame. I replaced the glass with a sheet of ply wood and covered it with a felt like material. This gave me a good top with a rim all the way around it.

This sounds like a nice updated version of the quickie TV table. You could probably also throw a small suitcase on and use that as the top.
