As some of you may know the million dollar illusion as well as the Troupe dissappearence require a back curtain. I would like to preform one of these illusions on a stage with a solid back wall. Is the any way around this besides buying 100 feet of fabric and installing it.and the sides are really far apart

Chase P.- in short, yes. There are several ways around it, but only if you don't use the illusion's traditional set up.
On a side note, if you're still obsessing over AGT, neither of those illusions would make a good act- they take too long, and there's too much business with people getting in or out of cabinets. You want something that will showcase you and your persona- and you've only got mere moments to do it. You may be best off sticking with stage manipulation effects. It's tough to establish a character while you're spinning a large box in circles. -Erik

Also I couldn't see you trouping in a MDM for an audition, unless you were one of the "invited to audition" magi. they may give you set-up time etc.

And let's not forget that this giant thing takes time to install!

If you want a self-contained illusion that does not require a backdrop and hasn't been seen too often, try Jim Gerrish's "Die-A-Bolical" from his PVC Pipe Illusions Book 2. You only produce one person, but if you can show the box empty from every possible angle, and even tilt it back to show beneath it, you can still make an amazing production of your assistant.

Go in for the expanding die version- it's a variant of an illusion that's so old and classic, it's practically new again.

Comment from the low rent district...
Many many years ago I bought a wonderful little manuscript called "Victory Cartons." It at least claimed to have been written during WWII when construction materials were in short supply (ergo the name.) Basically, it showed how to build a bunch of stage illusions out of ordinary appliance cardboard cartons. I built both a "sword box" and a single person appearance cabinet this way. The person appearance can be done on any stage or other venue other then surround just so long as you have something to lean the flat cartons up against like a back wall. I always liked the fact that the cartons are something everyone is familiar with and thus don't "look like props." In addition, the appearance starts with both cartons (an inner one and an outer "cover") flat and thus looks pretty impossible
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

I have a solution in mind, that can be done in front of a brick wall if you want. It's a variation over the Copperfield setup for 13 and the Lotto-Car. PM if you want details.

You could use a boxed shape screen as a background that doesn't have to be as high as the roof. I think Louis De matos uses somthing similar.
